I wonder who actually follows those "chronological view order" lists for long-running franchises, it's pretty much always a terrible idea

like imagine starting Star Trek with Enterprise, lmao

Jonathan Riley-Smith from his magisterial work:

The basic issue with this film is obvious - it's a secular humanist portrayal of events that were anything but secular, so many characters are religious skeptics in a way that doesn't make any sense in the cultural context. The whole notion of the Christian Crusade resulted from---

really annoying, watched the first half of Kingdom of Heaven and then our TV had a breakdown

felt it was time to break my extended pause after watching TNG, so here we go with Deep Space Nine

this is the 90s show I'm least familiar with, so pretty much everything will be new to me - I'm ready!

Bleak social film about the inhumanity of systems and local power-hungry assholes with fingers in too many pies. There's brief moments of levity and kindness, but still - nothing hits quite as hard as ex-yugoslav movies that portray the plights of the downtrodden. Of course, I'm somewhat biased.

Good thread and shows how this gesture can serve to flatten out the very religious diversity to which it purports to draw attention.
There's a very stupid discourse on here where somebody tries to declare a group of Xians as "false" and then rel profs smugly say "not so fast, no moves to innocence mister" but this pretty obviously misses that part of the practice of Christianity is excommunication and disavowal.

they're smart enough to play this for all it's worth, and have the benefit of being correct about it
Gotta hand it to our propagandists, they will even try to spin 'China has no intention of attacking Taiwan or anyone' into a nefarious scheme to capitalize on America's war mongering.

They seem genuinely upset China won't attack.
China condemns Maduro capture, but some see it as a chance to assert its global position
Experts say Beijing may see the U.S.' seizing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro not as a license to move on Taiwan as much as a chance to undermine U.S. global leadership.

I'm so disillusioned with social media queer darlings, they keep having the most dogshit political views for years now

I don't know if i was ignorant before or they really did get more stupid and/or reactionary

Why are there so many fragile white policy and research guys on social media? They get so mad when authoritatively stating something doesn't persuade people.

However right now I've been sticking with the classic 1954. performance conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, it's a noticeably slower interpretation of the piece compared to today's performances but I like a lot of things about it - the soprano is really powerful at times

a few days ago I found a massive torrent that contains
all major recordings of Handel's Messiah since 1928. and I absolutely intend to nerd out over it

it's fascinating to see the changes in orchestral interpretation

Turns out it's also the oldest continuously performed piece of classical music

in a lot of ways, the late TNG interior design still looks like the ideal futuristic place to live
they really nailed it for that show

like yeah it's a technologically advanced future, but that doesn't mean you need to shove techy stuff absolutely everywhere, there's a bunch of comfy furniture

good review by Katie here
