There is no need to follow me back. I am just a freshly minted PhD student, trying to find a philosophical topic to write my dissertation on (while harboring a passion for Japan). I follow you because I find what you do interesting. That’s all.

Boosting this because it deserves more eyes on it. Bob's great, and this video's a fine example of why. He covers an interesting bit of Hollywood history with ramifications beyond its own moment, AND manages to tie it back into modern concerns about how we value art (and artists).
As I somewhat expected 🤷‍♂️ The Algorithm does NOT love a video essay about 100 year-old cowboy movies that doesn't frontload the present-day relativity 🙄 So if anyone wants to help this one find its way to the sources, outlets, forums etc that will boost it we'd be grateful

The Halo TV show makes the same mistake that a lot of prequels and adaptations do: nothing can ever be incidental, it all has to be connected, all part of some grand design.

They complain about the male loneliness epidemic but do men even try to make themselves attractive by showing off their shapely legs and festooning themselves with embroidery and lace? They do not

Me too. Up to 20 books at the same time. For years
True confession: I am a bookanizer. I read six, sometimes eight books at a time. Sometimes I won’t read one for years before picking it back up again

AI Blackface just another predictable and horrific product of this evil coloniser tech
The ‘Bush Legend’ is bringing us short videos of an Aboriginal person teaching us about native animals. But he isn’t real.

There's probably a dimension out there where not-terrible Scott Adams correctly read the direction business and technology was going.

There, Dilbert evolved into the full rich tech bro bad guy of the strip, and remained both funny and relevant.

We don't live in that dimension though.

i have been meaning to write something longer about how the various ideologies of the tech right are just warmed over pro-slavery apologetics
So much of the reactionary tech elite and rationalist movements' views, epitomized in Elon Musk, are indistinguishable from Calhounism. Here is Calhoun's famous 1948 speech arguing that Jefferson's assertion that "all men are created equal" was wrong. teachingamericanhistory.org/document/spe...

Having just finished @jamesmuldoon.bsky.social's piece, I was struck by how hard it is to report on very real parasocial relationships with technology while also being clear about agency.
The first point here is she isn't his girlfriend; she's a sycophantic computer programme he's set up to praise him.

We need to stop indulging this

Cook’s cowardice is especially egregious when you remember that, 11 years ago, he famously summoned Travis Kalanick to Cupertino to threaten removing Uber from the app store unless Kalanick stopped breaking Apple’s rules.

And it worked!
