E.g. Canada has long been a free rider on American military protection. Galling! But hard to avoid if your priority is American *national* interest, given the facts of geography and economics. Trump can only ignore these facts because he doesn't care about national interest, only his own.
This is why Trump's lack of any restraint when it comes to the weaponization of economic ^ security interdependence (see @himself.bsky.social & @abenewman.bsky.social 👇) is so self-defeating: you need to keep the benefits of dependence higher than the costs.
