"The Russian collusion story was never about shadowy foreign forces assaulting an innocent democracy ... It was about ... elite impunity where American consultants, Russian oligarchs, Saudi princes, European politicians, Israeli intelligence figures and British ex-spies all swim in the same waters."

The thing about Warsh is that he's a crook but not a moron.
Artist's rendering of Kevin Warsh in his confirmation hearing when asked how soon he can get started on shrinking the Fed's balance sheet, as he's promised.

(Hint: He knows he can't do this now.)

We say this every time, but it remains true that it's a real puzzle how Chotiner continues to find interview subjects.

Trump: "I have determined that the fastest way to bring The Trump Kennedy Center to the highest level of Success, Beauty, and Grandeur, is to cease Entertainment Operations for an approximately two year period of time, with a scheduled Grand Reopening that will rival and surpass anything."

OMG!
Chotiner shot that man right in the face with his own gun and he never heard the *click*.

OMG can this be real?

"Apparently there was a screening yesterday where the only two audience members were journalists who had come to interview other audience members, so they ended up interviewing each other. The ghost of Neil Postman then materialized and yelled at them." disq.us/p/34zev93

E.g. Canada has long been a free rider on American military protection. Galling! But hard to avoid if your priority is American *national* interest, given the facts of geography and economics. Trump can only ignore these facts because he doesn't care about national interest, only his own.

@dknedal.bsky.social and I warned about this at the very start of the first Trump administration, when we argued in @foreignaffairs.com that deconstructing the web of agreements created by the U.S. would lead to worse deals, because those agreements were made when the U.S. had far more leverage.
Trump Won't Get the Best Deals
If the Trump Doctrine is to put “America First” by focusing on bilateral bargains—understood in terms of short-term winners and losers—then its corollary is the “Good Negotiator Policy.”

🧵Grim irony: boosters of Trump FP from his first term onwards have argued that, unlike this predecessors, he "gets" the transition from unipolarity to multipolarity. But the biggest part of that transition is the availability of alternative "goods providers" to the 🇺🇸 — which means reduced 🇺🇸leverage.
The cliché explanation for how authority is more efficacious than coercion: "if I say I'll shoot you if you don't clean the blackboard, you'll only do what I want when there's a gun to your head."

Trump is reaping the threat-adjustment-threat death spiral of doing FP exclusively through coercion.

Moreover, it should come as no surprise that Trump 2.0 is converging on an imperialist repertoire. As @pkmacdonald.bsky.social argued in a series of articles — particularly tinyurl.com/22us56u6 & tinyurl.com/38f7bjw5 — sometimes it makes more sense to think of "empire" as a strategy of weakness
