If you are a US citizen who has been scanned by one of these pls hmu. You might have a chance to do the funniest thing.
New from 404 Media: you can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's new facial recognition app, according to internal DHS document I obtained. Photos captured by the app are stored for 15 years, including U.S. citizens. We've seen officers scanning faces w/ phones on streets

Some assorted reminders as we enter the weekend:
1. Posting illegal content is a violation of §3.B of the Bluesky terms of service.
2. Violations of the TOS may be reported through the app. See TOS §6.A
3. The Hatch Act (5 USC §7321 et seq) is a law.

A side benefit of the new Texas Business Courts for trial lawyers is getting to have more hearings in the fancy appellate courthouses

Took a stats class in business school during undergrad that included an open book essay test on Moneyball. I didn’t even buy the book let alone read it - just read the back cover of someone’s copy walking into the classroom.

Got an A.

Says more about my classmates than me but 🤷‍♂️
As an instructor, I'd rather see your fever dream, No Doze-fueled 4AM essays written at an IHOP rather than anything generated by an LLM.

Hope this helps
I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

There’s obviously a lot of authoritarian creep in many facets of our lives these days but this is one that terrifies me because I don’t see the level of attention it deserves
Trump's higher ed ransom note is here - everyone would have to acquiesce to their unprecedented demands or not be "given priority for grants," plus they can demand "reimbursement" for "violations" www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

A mechanism to enforce fealty. An attack on academic freedom and democracy

Legitimate LOL at this
OMG - the judge in Florida just sua sponte struck the complaint in the Trump v NYT case for -wait for it - violating Rule 8.

Lawyers, tell the folks at home how hard it is to get the complaint struck outright for something like that in fed eral court.

I have had to deal with some truly bs RICO claims and this would still probably be the most laughable of any
Deputy AG Blanche: RICO is available to all kinds of organizations committing crimes and committing wrongful acts… So is it sheer happenstance that individuals show up at a restaurant where the president is trying to enjoy dinner and accost him with vile words?

the maga constitution doesn’t allow any institution, public or private, to explicitly work to ameliorate racial inequality but allows the government to racially profile
BREAKING: By an apparent 6–3 vote, the Supreme Court halts an injunction that had prevented immigration agents from racially profiling Latinos in central California.

Sotomayor, dissenting, says the decision is "unconscionably irreconcilable with our nation's constitutional guarantees."

While this thread is about U Chicago as a canary in the coal mine, the concern is applicable to higher ed generally. These concerns are certainly evident in Texas at least
the crisis in which the University of Chicago is now engulfed -- one entirely of its own making, and which has led to the (hopefully temporary) suspension of admissions into numerous PhD programs in the humanities -- represents I think a seismic event in the history of American higher education
