Also, on a purely craft level, the polish put on STRANGER THINGS is nuts. The sound mix alone tops not just other comparable streaming shows, but theatrical releases.

All for a YA horror show!!!

Starting episode 6 and maaaaaan, STRANGER THINGS rules.

Y'all missing out.
Idk guys, I think it's pretty damn cool the biggest thing on TV is a Stephen King-inspired, D&D themed horror show that looks like it cost a billion dollars, is eventized on holidays, and features spectacular creature FX.

Yuck that yum if you want, but that 4th ep of STRANGER THINGS is gnnnarrrrly.

Last night’s rewatch of DIE HARD confirmed one thing for me: the shot where Al Powell walks out of the minimart and looks up at the skyline, only to see (and not hear) muzzle flashes above Nakatomi Plaza, is about as cool a piece of cinema as you could hope for.

My new favorite joke in CHRISTMAS VACATION is Clark putting lightbulbs in the shopping cart and Cousin Eddie immediately crushing them with more dog food.

Your turn.

just heard that my old friend Lawrence Raffel has died. I used to review horror films for his site and then later he hired me at FEARnet. we drifted apart after that site went under, and I wish we hadn't. my heart goes out to his wife and his son.

When the title card showed up 17 minutes in I was confident I was in for a banger. Terrifying, heart-breaking, and maddening showcase of existential woe in a world gone insane and seemingly lacking reason or answers. Vitamin C’s “Graduation (Friends Forever)” meets Blair Witch Project for Gen Z.

“Stand By Me ends with one of the most iconic one-liners: ‘I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?’ And it's bittersweet to hear in light of Reiner's death. I would argue one doesn't have friends or movies like the ones they had when they were 12.” 💔
Wrote a celebration of Rob Reiner's features through tears this morning. I talked about how his movies taught a generation of film lovers how to feel while reminding us why life is worth living. It's free over at The Film Maven.

First person to send us a selfie with a baby watching MAN FINDS TAPE at the Baby Day screening wins... Something. I don't know what, but it'll be special!
MAN FINDS TAPE’s final theatrical screening (as currently scheduled) is a baby day show tomorrow at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. This is fitting as babies are our target audience. Shout out to babies. Hope you dig it.

As we mourn Rob Reiner, don’t skip this: he was, pretty much, personally responsible for overturning California’s Prop 8 banning same sex marriage.

Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.
