From there I headed east on the Riverwalk pathway. A bit slick at the start, but got better as I got further east. Lots of people out using the paths in this glorious weather. Ran into a friend walking to work & saw lots of other bikes commuting.

#yycbike report: I had to head downtown today so I took 10th Street NW down to the river path. The painted lane is mostly covered in slush/ice/snow so I had to take the lane pretty often. Then when you hit Kensington, there are so many detours!

#yycbike report: I came home through PIP & then up to McHugh Bluff by the curling club. Paths are great until you get to the top. 2nd Street bikeway is very slidey snirt & Balmoral Circus still hasn't been plowed. Trying to escalate it before it freezes later this week & gets extra dangerous.

Exactly why reposting it makes no sense to me.
And worse - removing bike lanes in Alberta's cities in the middle og a pedestrian death epidemic is...a choice.

Oh, Calgary makes a brief appearance. That's embarrassing. I don't cycle very much and the ultra crappy bike lane near me, where a cyclist was crushed by a dump truck this year, does not inspire me to increase cycling. @jeromyyyc.bsky.social @natefor8.bsky.social

I also think it's proof the "Bicycle Lobby" needs to put out an ad campaign about snirt. It's obvious from many comments there that they have no idea how impossible it is to ride in. One does not simply "just move over" in that scenario <Boromir meme here>.

The professional organizations are letting this happen.

The UCP are counting on collaborators all throughout the system that will nod their heads and go along with it.

We need to get into the habit of ignoring bullshit rules shielding the corrupt.

The Law Society, APEGA and others need to stand up for their principles. Call out these maple MAGA idiots, dare the UCP to charge them. Will never happen, of course.

I once saw somebody who queued for 45 minutes every day to drive 1/2 mile. Motonormativity is such a powerful force, I suspect for a lot of people driving and movement are seen as the same thing. Add in the influence of habits and automatic behaviour and non-car alternatives don't even register

I refuse to repost anything to do with the UCP threatening to rip out #yycbike lanes.

Why?

Because nothing will stop then from doing what they want to do and in the interest of self care I am not playing their stupid game.

Also, I will lay down in front of the machines if it actually happens.

I would strongly argue we don't need to learn. We know. The City knows. We just continually choose to not do it to the scale it needs to be done.

And with the modest budget adds for this year - we can both celebrate progress and know it's not enough.

Morning update: A light layer of trace snow now covers everything. Just be aware of where the icy/rutty spots were before and it should be relatively easy winter rolling. #yycbike
#yycbike report: Eau Claire, Riverwalk, Bow North to around the zoo with bare cleared path. Nose creek cleared but left a thin layer of cover over most of the pathway, ditto for Fox Hollow hill. Still relatively easy rolling conditions.
