CHRISTMAS WEEK WEATHER ON THE PRAIRIES. Travel plans? There may be weather related disruptions. Cold? For most of us, yes. And, not everyone on the prairies will have a white Christmas. The update's at Rural Roots Canada: www.ruralrootscanada.com/prairie-weat...
Prairie Weather This Week – Dec 21 |
It's Christmas week, and in this update, the focus is on travel conditions, and who gets a White Christmas. Cold weather stress on humans and livestock.

#yycbike report: Bow north from Sunnyside to Nose creek cleared very nicely (including around the zoo). Nose creek same conditions as my quoted report. Fox hollow hill not cleared yet, had to walk some big drift sections. Side roads have nice hard pack right now that will probably soften up.
#yycbike report: Fox hollow hill not cleared, but bare areas not covered in snow drifts. Nose creek appears to have had at least one pass, but still lot of snow spots. Bow not cleared around the zoo. East Village cleared very nicely, stops at Centre street bridge which has had one crappy pass (boo).

She's getting messy at YYC. Flights holding to land starting to discuss diversion options.

Riddle me this University District, why isn't the highlighted sidewalk/pathway cleared? Was a completely iced up bumpy mess yesterday, then the next block to the east was perfectly cleared. #yycbike

#yycbike report: Eau Claire, Riverwalk, Bow north MUP and Nose Creek pretty much all ice. 😬 There are rare spots of bare pavement, but you can't really tell. Just assume it's all ice. Funny enough bridges over the rivers were bare and dry, possibly getting heat from the water?

Holy moly!

Did you know the city decided to erect signs in the middle of the small sidewalk along 16th avenue on both ends over Nose creek saying "crosswalk closed"? Pain in the ass to move the bike past instead of sitting in the cold waiting for the train to cross down below. Thanks City... #yycbike

What a great morning of planes closer to me. Cargolux 747-8, WestJet 787-9. Good times. #avgeek
Finally, my long nightmare of planes not being closer to me at work is over. #avgeek

Morning update: A light layer of trace snow now covers everything. Just be aware of where the icy/rutty spots were before and it should be relatively easy winter rolling. #yycbike
#yycbike report: Eau Claire, Riverwalk, Bow North to around the zoo with bare cleared path. Nose creek cleared but left a thin layer of cover over most of the pathway, ditto for Fox Hollow hill. Still relatively easy rolling conditions.

#yycbike report: Bow north from Sunnyside to around the zoo, trace cover with lots of varying slickness. A "drag your foot to see" kind of morning. Nose creek has a bit more grab since clearing wasn't as good, but very similar conditions to Bow north. Watch yourself on hills, corners, and braking.

Super niche but the 11a Street NE pathway from 40th avenue to 34 avenue has been cleared. #yycbike
#yycbike report (0530) Eau Claire, Riverwalk, Bow north and Nose creek MUP all ~3cm snow covered. No clearing crews out yet. Side streets vary from snirt central to some nice hard pack. Main roads mainly wet and a bit sloppy but easy to ride through.

#yycbike update: Fox Hollow, Nose Creek and Bow around the zoo cleared...until just under the zoo main pedestrian bridge. Then uncleared until just before Baines bridge. Bow cleared west from there, Riverwalk very clear now too. Much easier riding than this morning, side streets still snirt city.
