oh also, im an adoptee so I talk about identity and othering and racism here. and I'm very vocal about evidence based parenting and have zero tolerance for lactivists and anti vaxers.
guess it's time for another introduction? hi, I'm Octo (the name comes from rodents, not from octopodes but nobody cares and I of ran with that), I write for a living, I have kids, I like geeky stuff, especially games, I write in German and English and like to deep dive into weirdly specific topics

Ah, yes, the constant war between what I now know is ADHD enthusiasm, hyperfocus, impulsiveness, and being 'too much', and the intense desire to never be seen or perceived ever again

Chadwick Boseman and James van der Beek both died in their 40s of an illness that's treatable if a colonoscopy catches it but almost no insurer covers them for people under 45, this is what Engels meant by "social murder"

Utterly tragic news. Do yourself a favour and watch James in ‘Don’t Trust The B**ch in Apartment 23’, it’s one of the funniest self-parodies in modern comedy
James Van Der Beek, who has been battling cancer, has died.

He was 48.

This article that was going around the other day wasn't claiming that AI tools don't make workers more "productive" in some sense (they do self-report that they are getting more done!) but does suggest people end up working more while being less engaged & more stressed. hbr.org/2026/02/ai-d...
AI Doesn’t Reduce Work—It Intensifies It
One of the promises of AI is that it can reduce workloads so employees can focus more on higher-value and more engaging tasks. But according to new research, AI tools don’t reduce work, they consisten...

MAGA complaining that they didn't understand Bad Bunny's performance has nothing to do with a language barrier.

It has EVERYTHING to do with a HUMANITY barrier.

in discussions here and with luddites I'm not AI condemning enough, at work I'm too sceptical, sometimes you can't win
this would be really funny to do to me considering I am the AI skeptic at my workplace
Someone tried to get me fired by messaging my job saying I'm talking on here about using AI. They encourage it, you can't get me fired this way.

Just gross how often "progressives" love to find excuses to try to ruin the lives of queer women with opinions they don't like.

I want to remind y'all that ebooks are not free of external costs. Ebooks have associated environmental costs. Data storage and cloud servers aren't free to use, or consequenceless, or inherently better for the planet. Don't mistake personal convenience for global benefits.

"The 'joke' that Trump’s account spread is plainly sinister. The idea that Black people sit somewhere between white people and apes has long been used to justify cruelty."

Gift link. Short and devastating.

The White House took 12 hours to remove a video depicting the former president and his wife as apes.

Woke 2 will fizzle out if it embraces Luddism

The screenshotted tweet is correct. Like it's increasingly just part of working in the software industry now. I've struggled a lot despite working in a lucrative field because of discrimination. I can't deliberately put myself at a disadvantage.

It's not just the women and girls we know of. It's all their future work, and everything they could have been, and how we build structures that shelter their abusers. It's how a man's future has always been worth more than my past, present, and future combined.

It's hard, as both a woman and a journalist, to understand both of these things and figure out a path forward. I can't mitigate them through more personal effort, education or professional experience. And it's galling to read the defenses for the layoffs and the people named in the Epstein files.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

I swear this clip is not edited. Trump pivots from downplaying the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti ("two people out of tens of thousands and you get bad publicity") to in the very next breath claiming "we've been very tough on the waters," leaving Tom Llamas baffled ("the waters?")
