my latest is out today. higher ed right now is a difficult place to be, and Palestine is at the heart of it. some faculty, however, are working hard to create networks of support and solidarity despite the difficult terrain.

None of these laws passed a single state legislature until five years ago, and now:
Today House Republicans voted 216-211 to pass MTG’s bill to criminalize gender-affirming care for minors nationwide, marking the first time a national ban on care for trans youth has reached — and passed — the House floor.

If passed, the bill would punish doctors and parents who provide or consent to a minor receiving gender-affirming care.

great reminders!
i'd add to this that at one point, cfc's were everywhere and in millions of major appliances around the world when we decided they were destroying the planet. nothing industry creates is "inevitable" or "here to stay" no matter how ubiquitous
just a collection of "inevitable" multi-billion dollar tech that was going to be the future of everything until everyone in the audience who was supposed to just get on board said "lol no"

The idea that enhancing surveillance in academic buildings will protect students from mass shootings is absolutely fucking preposterous. What it will increase is the criminalization of our students. Reject it!!!

case in point. i was in grad school at this time too (with Nate but in sociology) and i didn't even get to be in grad school with the same title guaranteed for 6 yrs without scrapping HARD for it.

i won the job market lottery and got a TT job and that only lasted 4 years.
This has reminded me of an ugly time. I was in grad school at the U of Minnesota in 2008 when the financial crisis hit. Prior to that the norm in the dept I was in (history) had been that people could stay in grad school on assistantships until they finished the degree but the university introduced

if a job is eliminated to "streamline" work in my department, I should make no mistake: that job is now my job too. "inefficiency" is fiscal sleight-of-hand meaning more work per person for less pay per person.

i didn't read it and i refuse to, but i'm really stuck on the fact that this guy's beginning grievance is having a steady job for 6 yrs without the institution collapsing or the job being eliminated. like... that's the dream?
My dear boy, you think you are talking about anti-white prejudice, but you are really just describing the liberal and literary professions (journalism, academia, publishing) collapsing under the weight of four decades of neoliberalism:

any of y'all have suggested resources for my friend to share with their bosses?
hey i'm burnt does anyone have resources to share with coworkers etc to dissuade use of AI? i am being asked to do trainings with platforms because it will "aid my work" but i think ... it won't. and having data to support that, particularly in non profit fundraising or development, would be immense

this is mostly to say PREA has never been the answer and anything coming from the DOJ will not improve things for trans prisoners. they rely on mutual aid and strong communities inside. PREA in its current form & usage mostly dismantles those communities.

does anyone know details about the "total activity" measure in Canvas? is it reliable and accurate?

has anyone experimented with giving grades for online classes based on the literal time spent on the class?

i'm grading and the AI slop is getting to me.

i can’t emphasize enough that you, reader, MUST take responsibility for the air we share—or who else will? YOU must be the one to break chains of transmission by being the one to open the window, to turn on the air purifier, to wear & model wearing a mask properly—maybe even hand them out to others.
We're completely screwed if our response to measles is going to be asking antivaxxers - the most selfish and stupid people in our society - to voluntarily self-report and quarantine for 21 days each every time they get exposed
More than 250 people who were exposed to measles, including dozens of unvaccinated school-aged children, are quarantining in South Carolina as the state wrestles to contain an outbreak that has sickened more than 110 people.
