this is exactly what it has felt like for a long time to try to teach about US imperialism. students just like cannot believe that the CIA has overturned the government in almost every country in Latin America, even though that's not a controversial fact at all.

yeah if you saw film of that Dearborn school board meeting 3 years ago I think (the one where the queer teacher left scared for their safety), a lot of that seemed to be organized by CAIR

This is an important flag. At least in MI, they have also been big supporters of anti-LGBTQ book bans and TERF rules for schools, which really, really sucks because yeah, they do good work on some things.

thank you, Shannon, this is a helpful reminder. I generally have a lot of patience for students, but I also pitch the class differently if it's gonna be a general education, you know? I wasn't expecting this and my patience has been eaten up by having to re-tool for shitty AI and everything else.

I got this useful bon mot from a middle school teacher recently.

In response to, “I DONT UNDERSTAND,” he calmly said, “okay what steps have you taken to understand?”

And that’s when I realized that a lot of folks have no steps.

I considered that, but since it's week 10 and they've been in the class and interacting in more constructive ways up to now, I don't think that's the case.
