Here there and everywhere (god this makes me sound like a bot)
It’s the sort of thing that’s so pointless they’ll debate if it actually happened or was invented by Trump’s enemies.
I feel for future historians trying to make sense of the ‘Greenland crisis’.

Memories of the big protest in Des Moines following the passage of abortion restrictions where seemingly every speaker was talking about Margaret Sanger and Eugenics and not how many women were about to be harmed by the new law.
This is absolutely a huge problem in protest culture and it’s a major obstacle to allowing protests to grow. People are turning up to protests to fight Trump, ICE, recent abuses. Invariably the speakers are going off about 200 years of stolen land or US imperialism, and many of those people leave.
I really agree with this—my stance is not “don’t bring in other issues” but “for the love of god, do NOT bring in other issues in a ham-fisted way that doesn’t illuminate the connection for someone who didn’t already agree”

I have seen ppl who were highly motivated to protest a particular thing…

The chad Norman Borlaug vs the virgin Paul Ehrlich.
This chart documents one of humanity’s greatest achievements, in my view.

We just lived through the fastest population growth in human history.

It would have been impressive if food supplies had merely kept pace — but on every continent, they grew even faster than the population.

This is why I got a degree in political science, so I can spend the rest of my life explaining- to friends, family, and strangers on the internet- that rally round the flag effects are actually rare and require specific circumstances and aren't just "presidential approval goes up when he does war"
One thing every new FP crisis makes very clear is that millennials and zoomers have adopted some very weird theories of how foreign policy intersects with public opinion as a result of the Iraq War and stories about it thereafter

Surely it’s just the death of Charlie Kirk meaning no one on the right is winning over the youth anymore

The 2012 GOP autopsy found their big problem was anti immigration policies were hurting their support with Hispanic voters at which point they proceeded to win an election with Donald Trump running on building a wall. None of this matters.
not really convinced this matters, very little of anything from 2024 will be applicable to 2028, but it will definitely make the discourse toxic and insufferable for a couple days
BREAKING: The Democratic National Committee will NOT release its long-awaited autopsy on Trump's 2024 win. The report is completed but Dem leaders decided it could distract from their winning streak, so it will remain secret. Not good.

Love explaining to people that I'm getting bottled water because I have lost multiple reusable bottles almost immediately and am at the point where I know it's better just to get a non-reusable bottle and use it until I lose it instead.
I have restricted the mentions to this because I could see it becoming perfect fodder for the type of person who may think "yes, I'm going to assume this grown woman has never heard of reusable water bottles, this is my time to shine"

Also as someone from middle of nowhere Iowa I can guarantee nowhere is paying $25 an hour. Also the only reason a house that big is going for that cheap is because it’s a meth house.
It was listed last year for $144k, so if you wait until next year you can get it for $58k which is good bc your neighbors all voted for the guy who's killing the post office so the only job in town is going to be bussing at Stinky's and you're gonna have to fight the girl for that position.
1. Note that the girl in this pastoral fantasy is sort of a landscape feature, like Stinky’s, not autonomous.

2. Also I am 75% sure she’s not a nice girl, she’s awful, and also she’s dead and this is her Hell

The brain three million years ago: Those apes down the river want to kill you and take your papayas. Be prepared (true, useful)
The brain today: Those apes down the hall want to kill you and take your papayas. Be prepared. (untrue, root of most evil in the world)
love this feature of the human brain that sometimes, for no obvious reason, makes you wake up and feel about as calm as a warren-less rabbit on an open field with eagles flying overhead

Someone really needs to write something about the CNBC class ragebait industrial complex because they've been doing it for years and unlike Politico and the like no one has really cottoned on to it
Fascinating thing about this story is that you could easily write a better and IMO more accurate one about a woman who has fallen in love with someone 17 years older, and has concluded 'I don't want to run the risk of not getting to enjoy my time with you' and has lived frugally to achieve that.
The secret to early retirement; dine out rarely, fly economy and be a Google employee making $390,000/year married to a fellow Google employee 17 years older than you who likely makes twice as much as you.

The real reason behind it is militaries are expensive and being an island behind another island is cheap but no one wants to publicly make that argument.
Irish antimilitarism is funny because the core premise is that Ireland‘s history of British exploitation is exactly why defense of Ireland‘s airspace and sea lanes should be mostly outsourced to the United Kingdom.

So Louis was definitely asexual, right?
I see people talking about Charles Guiteau having phimosis, which reminded me about Louis XVI's inability to consummate his marriage (not due to phimosis, as it turns out), and this incredible letter that his brother-in law the Emperor wrote to his brother about Louis's difficulties:

Too many people explaining how there's a rod holding the flag up, not enough people focusing on how she literally said there's no gravity on the moon.
"go to TikTok. See for yourself."

My favorite one of these was back in the tea party days when some conservative mps tried to replicate it but hosted literal tea parties
The thing about the Conservative party's current attempt to mimic absolutely everything the American right does, down to the letter, is how unbelievably cringe it always ends up

Would like to see secondary confirmation on this because a swing this big with no obvious cause feels like it might just be a weird sample or a methodology change
New 🍻: Republicans are abstaining from alcohol at record levels - with a third fewer saying they drink this year compared with 2024.

The nationwide drinking rate of Americans has also plummeted to a nearly 90-year low, according to a v long running Gallup survey 👀

Apart from the good explanation in this thread, a conspiracy to fake the official data doesn't make sense. If inflation were high people wouldn't be chill because falsified official data said it's low.
On top of being a screenshot of a tweet, this post is spreading disinformation and you shouldn’t engage with it except to correct.

But since people are, I guess I need to do a thread explaining what imputation is. Everything I’m going to discuss here comes from one of two sources.

Illegal immigration in the United States is going to solve itself in the next 10-15 years
This is actually kind of crazy and again implies it's not really any specific country's policies. But it does continue to support my "video games got too fun, more fun than baby" theory.

Having spent two years on Medicaid in part time* work I wonder what percentage of the part time workers are working 39 hours a week because their workplace doesn’t want to give the benefits that come with full time.
64% of Medicaid recipients under age 65 work, per KFF. As for the rest, see below. There are not 34m potential agricultural workers on Medicaid just raring to go pick vegetables.

I'm not so bothered by the weird horny fantasy as by the failure to understand it's a weird fantasy, the decision to share it publicly, and the fact that it has half a million likes.

Reminded of how surprised I was when I learned Nero and Caligula- the two text book examples of imperial depravity who I’d always associated with the fall- were actually some of the first emperors.
The long stretch of Roman chronology. The Roman Republic lasted 478 years, the Empire in the west lasted 507 and in the east 1,484.

Consequently, events which basic textbooks place very close to each other were often generations, sometimes centuries apart.
What’s common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

Not everything you think should be said out loud.
