Remember when Mearsheimer added a China chapter to his book and suddenly he was on all the panels and talk shows as an Asia Knower? good times.
On both the left and right, being a China hawk was a shortcut to being seen as an Asia expert. Say some things about Great Power Competition and Taiwan, and suddenly you're qualified to comment on anything happening in Asia.

The Great Asshole Theory: society exists solely to exert some kind of control over the assholes. Sometimes society over corrects and sometimes society gives up and puts the assholes in charge, but history is just one big conflict between the assholes and the rest of humanity.
