Correct. Enforce the tax laws against those nonprofits that are violating them. "Taxing churches" will just bankrupt all the synagogues, mosques, and smaller churches and leave the worst of the worst standing.

The biggest revelation in Lizza’s tell-all tonight is that Mark Sanford was running for president in 2020. I genuinely had zero recollection of this.

absolutely NOTHING i am saying here should in any way be construed as "therefore, white people outside of the South aren't racist and have no work to do"

the 1960s was not that long ago, and my key take-away from reading a lot of books about the Civil Rights movement recently has been the exact diametric opposite of "the South isn't really that racist compared to the rest of the country"

this doesn't mean the South is hopeless, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't keep trying to win elections and fight the MAGAs in the South, but maintaining this fantasy nonsense about how the South doesn't REALLY have a uniquely racist culture in a number of respects is just foolishness

The lesson we should all take from this travesty is simple: If this ethics compromised hack can get a book deal with prose that reads like it came directly from a moody teenagers diary, anything is possible.

Pitch that book idea, write that play, finish your novel. We can do it.
I regret to inform you that Olivia Nuzzi's book appears to be Perfect

insane, stupid, comically overwritten, dishy, politically indefensible I cannot wait to get my hands on it I must accept this is who I am as a person at some deep level whether I like it or not www.vanityfair.com/news/story/o...

Paul Krugman only reads blogs and that is why he, unlike everyone else who has been in punditry for decades, has never lost his mind

Yep. There are horrible rural whites in New England but there are objectively and obviously just way fewer of them.

(My family is from the NC Appalachians and I’ve spent a lot of time in VT - they are fascinatingly culturally different despite looking very similar).

Environment is 8-9-esh points more D than in January 100% tracks with special election results and 2025 election results.
in January it was
Rural:
GOP - 60%
Dem - 32

Suburban:
Dem - 46%
GOP - 45%

Urban:
Dem - 59%
GOP - 33%

so that's a 6 point swing left in rural areas, 6 point swing left in suburban areas, and a 13 point swing left in urban areas
Would love to see some earlier breakdowns of GB to compare this with

We deserve better than that. But also, to be a clear-eyed realist means to look at better examples of where this Administration might be steering us. 1970s Argentina, Hungary, Turkey, Duterte's Philippines, are all more instructive and useful.

Each contains its own horrors.

There are way too many trans commentators who overindex on the Nazi Germany example, and one in particular who treats it like this recipe book being followed to the letter with exactly the same results, driving people to despair... while she sits in Canada.

They want you despairing, suicidal, and quiescent. They want you to be convinced of their ultimate victory, and they want you to tell all your friends about it on social media, where everyone can see. They eat this shit up.

It's why I think combatting despair and doomer narratives is important not just for its own sake (because we deserve better), but also for deliberately refusing to do this government's work for them.

For well over a decade now, the Republican Party has been less about using state capacity to enforce bigotry than using the power of the state to *crowdsource* bigotry, to make life harder and less livable for disfavoured groups. Make bigotry less shameful, make bigots openly proud of their bigotry.

Anyone talking about "extermination lists" right now is not to be taken seriously. Not because it's impossible, but because crowing about that here and now, when much resistance remains possible and is even starting to succeed, amounts to some Tokyo Rose/Lord HeeHaw level propaganda for the enemy.

The reason I get frustrated with people who overindex on the example of Nazi Germany and treat it like a note-for-note blueprint for where we are now is that they terrify our people into making terrible decisions, or into quiescence, or, worse, suicidal hopelessness.
