Correct. Enforce the tax laws against those nonprofits that are violating them. "Taxing churches" will just bankrupt all the synagogues, mosques, and smaller churches and leave the worst of the worst standing.

the 1960s was not that long ago, and my key take-away from reading a lot of books about the Civil Rights movement recently has been the exact diametric opposite of "the South isn't really that racist compared to the rest of the country"

this doesn't mean the South is hopeless, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't keep trying to win elections and fight the MAGAs in the South, but maintaining this fantasy nonsense about how the South doesn't REALLY have a uniquely racist culture in a number of respects is just foolishness
