Scientists, especially Seattle ones! One of my research scientists is heading to her PhD and we're looking to fill her spot, if not replace her. If you know someone looking to do cool and impactful translational research give them this:

i wrote an essay for @thetransmitter.bsky.social about what it feels like to serve on an NIH grant review panel (study section) right now

Fear and loathing on study section: Reviewing grant proposals while the system is burning
As grants are canceled, delayed and subject to general uncertainty, participating in study sections can feel futile. But it’s more important than ever.

URGENT: FlyBase has lost practically all its funding overnight; even user fees are tied up in denied grant funding. 🤬🤯

Any lab using @flybase.bsky.social please donate using the link in post below.

This incredible community, on whose backs our #Drosophila labs depend, can't be left out to dry.
My lab studies bacterial infections. We spend a lot of time looking at (or for) species-specific genetic and genomic databases for hosts and microbes. FlyBase is the best of all—there is literally no comparison. Its existence is under threat. Please donate.

this is getting ridiculous (in a good way). first it's $15 plasmid sequencing, now it's $25 C. elegans genome sequencing.

time to look through our freezer collection at all the mutants we never followed up...
Low cost #Celegans genomes too?!
Hey fellow Drosophila researchers - if you haven't heard, the UMGC is offering ultra low-cost genome sequencing! See here to learn more: z.umn.edu/UMGC-MOSS #Dros25

Many in biotech/private sector are boasting about their ways of funding and doing science

But they are staffed with PhDs and postdocs we train in our NIH and NSF funded labs in universities

With university labs lacking funds to train, the private sector will be profoundly harmed

1/3 Why does the US lead the world in the number of clinical trials? How come americans are given the unique chance to get the latest treatment and a fighting chance against often incurable diseases?

That's all thanks to research and the support from the NIH!

Extremely disappointed to see HHMI decide to kill their Inclusive Excellence program, including terminating the current IE3 awards to over a hundred institutions effective this year in the middle of a 6-year grant. I was hoping HHMI (and other private funders) would continue to lead the way.

Wow, very important study, with implications for other transgenic models of AD, especially those with documented variability (which is many of them)
Are you using 5xFAD mice to study Alzheimer’s disease? Our work out today @cp-neuron.bsky.social may be relevant to you 🐁🧠 Age and sex are known to influence Aβ plaque burden in these mice. Here, we found that the transgene parentage is another strong determinant.

Thread below: (1/11)
Parental origin of transgene modulates amyloid-β plaque burden in the 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease
The 5xFAD transgenic model, popular in Alzheimer’s disease research, exhibits varying cerebral plaque burden depending on the parental source of the transgene. Mice inheriting the transgene paternally...
