woo! this weird little paper (‘moorean skepticism’) is now forthcoming :) i argue we should see descartes as a social epistemologist and moore as a particularly pessimistic kind of skeptic.

this paper also seems relevant to the discussion, especially the part about the smug "everyone thinks that" tone

Want to read some rad queer philosophy, in the form of short snazzy personal essays? Check out the most recent issue of the APA Studies in LGBTQ+ Philosophy, cheekily titled "Make philosophy queer again!" which I've edited! 1/

Fanone gets it: Opposition to political assassinations includes people whose views have no redeeming qualities, like Charlie Kirk.

Sugarcoating his views not only is dishonest in itself, it conveys that maybe you wouldn't oppose assassination of people whose views you don't sugarcoat.
Thank you Michael Fanone. For those who do not recognize the name, Michael is one of the officers who defended America on January 6th and was left permanently injured as a result. He is a true hero of our Democracy.

One of the most pernicious delusions social media spreads in our age faux-populism is that there is an alternative to having an ‘expert class’. There is not. Yes, they can have biases. Yes, they can be wrong. Yes, they can even be corrupt. There still is no alternative. The world is complicated.

But in its actual content I think it's true & important: retaining the ability to see a behaviour as actually anti social and worthy of condemnation, without writing off the person engaged in the behaviour as unworthy of any support or incapable of improvement, is morally foundational. Vital.

Let’s see what happens when someone (I would say foolishly) tries to engage with him

One thing I'd like to know is are there any examples of a political party coming back from the kinda gangster cult of the personality thing the GOP now has going on without either societal collapse or losing a big war?
One thing that keeps me up these days: how is the next party in power supposed to govern? The GOP has signaled it will not always be bound by laws or international agreements it disagrees with. It’s not absolute — they blew up part of reconciliation, but not all; ignore some court orders, etc. (1/7)

Every time someone responds to an obviously normative-aspirational claim ("this not who we are", "this is not America", etc) with some I'm-very-radical descriptive rebuttal ("er actually America has always done <similar bad stuff>") an angel dies. Like, no joke, dead. Direct causal result of this.

Paper is finally up and open access (www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...), it's a sequel to an earlier paper where we'd argued that there's not good evidence that pre-publication peer review is a net benefit (www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1093/...). So in this one we suggest an alternative.
