people complain about the journal of controversial ideas, but they have managed to really streamline the peer review process and i think that's awesome

every time i see this reposted i'm struck by something new, in order:
-mom avowedly doesn't care about her son's social or emotional state
-dad is unable to parse a description of said state
-mom apparently thinks being good at math solves social problems throughout life
-it's 'pre-k math'
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Two kinds of public philosophy: 1. Op-ed you can reference at dinner parties and people will go ‘oh that’s interesting’; 2. Going ‘that op-ed sucks actually’

Turing: If the question of whether machines think could be settled by looking at how the general public use words, then a Gallup poll would do. But that's absurd.
Op-ed: Right, so a YouGov poll it is!

the argument of this op-ed is: 1. AI is intelligent because people are inclined to call it 'intelligent'; 2. AI will be conscious because people will be inclined to call it 'conscious'; and 3. consciousness does not entail moral status because most people don't behave as though it does

this is funny for the reasons the author notes, but i would add one reason not noted: do you think, occassionally, people have bad experiences connecting at american airports? if so, sorta undermines the Cultural Explanation noah proffers
Noah Smith is paid in the high six-figures to write a blog read by Americans who believe themselves to be intelligent. Yet, he is both unable to read a sign and also for some reason chose to have a 90 minute layover for a flight that takes 90 minutes.

Yeah, I’d say that qualifies as a ‘controversial idea’. Fair play
Gotta hand it to the Journal of Controversial Ideas, this seems like a banger of Kershnarian proportions

One time I mentioned off-handedly to my students at washu that I thought college admissions should be done predominantly by lottery, they didn’t seem super receptive lol
Hot take: way more things at universities should be done by lottery. Why the need to write rec letters and personal statements for small internal fellowships all the time? What is the benefit? Is the point just sustaining the illusion of meritocracy?
