I would put more money on continuing to harvest infinite energy from the sun over assuming that forcing everyone to use The Machine The Lies To You is the steady basis of an entire economy
A fun question. In 5 years time, what looks better? The US’s enormous bet & capex on AI? Or China’s equally enormous bet and capex on renewables?
China has made cheap, clean energy available in huge quantities. The world should take the win econ.st/4oqFszB

Blaszczyk on Humanism and AI Policy
Matt Blaszczyk (University of Michigan Law School) has posted Confronting Empty Humanism in AI Policy on SSRN. Here is the abstract: Humanist rhetoric plays an important role in political and legal discourse and, despite appearances, it does not necessarily lead to a defense of liberal democracy. Sometimes, such rhetoric is weaponized by illiberal actors; sometimes, it comes down to defending the status quo – while neither result is welcome.

What does it mean to have a human in the loop of medical AI? Here's a fun place to look: a 2022 FDA guidance that's about what *doesn't* count as a medical device!

Genomic data: neat! But also super sensitive! How can people get their own genomes analyzed without sharing stuff they don't want to?
Jake Sherkow of Illinois Law presents a neat technical approach and argues that yep, patent law can enable it.

Really wish I could put this on a sign that I could tap.

There is no reason to make this situation worse than it already is by insisting that there’s nothing to be done because we are all under a dictatorship already. It is not true, and it is not helpful.
OK, a roundup response to the "they won't follow the court orders" people.

First of all, you're wrong! The administration *is* following many of the court orders.

What's more, they're showing their understanding of the validity of court orders by seeking stays pending appeal when they lose.

This this this:
The purpose of writing is not to put words on a page. It’s to discover *which* words need to be put on the page to accurately express the thing you’re trying to express.
This puts it well & it’s a point I keep making about why using AI to write is so flattening. Writing is the process of working out & refining what you think. If I write an article, I’m not just generating 1000 plausible words. I’m trying to articulate ideas with precision, & challenging myself.
AI is for people who don't want to or can't think. Period.

I write to figure out what I think and how to think about it better.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

I decided on a lark, as a fellow, to attend the @yaleisp.bsky.social's conference on Innovation without IP (I wasn't presenting). I listened, agape, as a giant in the biomedical innovation law field, Rebecca Eisenberg, mentioned my job talk paper while discussing another.

What's the moment of luck that's had the biggest impact for your academic career? For me, it was how I wouldn't have gotten a PhD fellowship if it wasn't for the 1st-ranked person declining, which meant that I was awarded the fellowship as 2nd-ranked applicant. That was my last shot at a PhD.
