Sorry, but this @nytimes.com op-ed on free fares in New York City, by @galvinalmanza.bsky.social, is deeply ignorant of the issues.

It proposes that pretty social justice vibes and some careless citations will change facts of math. Thread: 1/

Today, the Trump administration repealed the endangerment finding: the ruling that served as the basis for limits on tailpipe emissions and power plant rules. Without it, we’ll be less safe, less healthy and less able to fight climate change—all so the fossil fuel industry can make even more money.

Such a thought-provoking piece to transit planning by renowned transit consultant Dr. Walker (PhD, Stanford, Humanities)!

I do think American transit planners tend to underestimate the value of proximity (and frequency), and prioritize the faster commutes to Downtown over more local destinations.

For Bay Area peeps about the potential consequences of failure of Connect Bay Area Transit Funding Measure
BART's newly released concepts for what they'll do if Connect Bay Area transit funding measure fails are terrifying.

Phase 1: 63% train hours cut & 10 station closures
Phase 2: Cumulative 70% train hours cut, 15 station closures
Phase 3 (if required): END BART SERVICE

We must pass the measure!

ICE detained multiple kids (all under the age of 10!) in the last week alone. Still kidnapping people based solely on the way they look. Still arresting parents at school pick up.

Nothing has changed in Minnesota. Nice words from the Admin won’t change that. ICE leaving will.

Folks, if you're into transit, and you're not following the Urban Institute's Dr. Yonah Freemark (PhD, Urban Planning, MIT), who on his website thetransportpolitic.com, documents all the transit projects around the world, then you're not doing TransitSky right.
Hundreds of transit projects will open globally in 2026.

On Transit Explorer—newly updated—use our new features to zoom to cities & projects, or turn back the time to see transit systems in the past:

I’m thankful you weren’t around in 1870, 1880, 1890 when the NYC Subway was being contemplated on being built.

Because then you, your children, your friends, and millions of others would not be benefitting from a subway that was built over a century ago and still are benefitting to this day.
a new line up the length of Manhattan’s east side? will our children’s children live to see it completed?

Folks, if you're into public transit, and you're not following Prof. Eric Goldwyn of NYU, then you're not doing Transit Sky right.

I have been very impressed with Prof. Goldwyn's presentations -- just cheery & optimistic, not much of a complainer -- something I don't see a lot of in transit folks.
41 miles of new subway for the cost of free buses. Here’s an audacious, expansive plan to expand the subway’s reach & catalyze housing to attack the affordability crisis. An incredible effort from NYU Marron team. Excited for this to be out in the world:

We have the dumbest voting electorate on the planet — namely, the majority of white voters.
The concern was that he would not hand over power to his VP and the country would be run for years by a dying man in failing health and poor mental acuity.

I love Kathy Hochul! She is the best governor for transit in the country right now and in some time for New York State!

I love Gov. Hochul's level of transit expansion ambition! It's what we should be expecting in politicians.
So how did Hochul move to become, as one advocate sez, “the best governor for transit in more than a generation”?

“I think Janno’s not-so-secret power is that he has been extraordinarily effective in hyping the governor up for this stuff,” sez @egoldwyn.bsky.social.

The Cambridge side of the BU Bridge should be rebuilt with a bike/ped flyover to replace the Reid Overpass. Local topography means it doesn't introduce new climb. If we're going to build a bridge, let's prioritize people walking and biking (it would be cheaper, too).
