Historian & Anthropologist of security technologies, once great lockpicker, now just a great dad.

Impossible to overstate how much I think about locks...
Pinned
Hi! I study the history & anthroplogy of security technologies, primarily locks, but have dabbled in door seals, encryption, etc.

Primary periods of focus are pre-history, 1700-1900 in the US/UK & modern era behavioral security in communities of affinity.

Formerly a competitive lockpicker.
Preference for your own children is the seed of eugenics, and pointing out that preference for your own children is inherent to the species/evolution/science IS eugenics.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

One thing I love about @prismreports.org is that they work so closely with incarcerated writers, and surface things I had never thought about before. This piece on how extended incarceration is a violation of reproductive rights by functionally serving as involuntary sterilization is fantastic.
Long prison sentences function as involuntary sterilization of incarcerated people
By keeping me imprisoned through the years when I might have become a parent, the prison system reproduces eugenicist logic

Fantastic news
NEW: Aurora City Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky has conceded. A stunning defeat for a MAGA media fixture who built a national profile on claims of a "complete gang takeover" of Aurora that led President Trump to visit and falsely proclaim the city "conquered" by an immigrant gang

A small town police force bragged that citizens "can't get a breath of fresh air in or out without us knowing" thanks to Flock surveillance cameras.

They used the cameras to wrongly accused a woman of a crime, forcing her to find other surveillance video to prove her innocence.

If you're planning to protest tomorrow and have questions about carrying your phone, please check out this article from my colleague @yaelwrites.com

It also shares an easy trick for stripping photos of their metadata.

Simply showing up to a protest leaves you susceptible to all sorts of surveillance, including cameras, drones, facial recognition, and more. There's not always a lot you can do about pernicious street...

My publisher’s been very patient. I’m not doing everything I said I’d do to promote this book (out in a few weeks) because I’m an organizer in a city under federal attack. My days are full and emotionally exhausting. Any help getting the word out means a lot. It's a book people need right now.

Some of y'all get caught on the discover feed without realizing it and get all twisted about it, and I get that, but periodically I just accidentally click through to @tcarmody.bsky.social's feed and slowly die of embarrassment while I scroll and click the little hearts way too many times.

@alexisthenedd.bsky.social Literally just found you to say to someone who understands: I'm still sad about Selfie not getting the audience (and seasons) it deserved.

Thanks for writing beautifully about it 5 years ago :)

I think about trans liberation every day. Many times a day every day. I routinely search the names of artists and authors I have loved with the words "trans liberation" tacked on.

I am angry all the time.

Weirdly I'm kinda happy I was here the day the CEO of this supposed public benefit corporation turned on the public for the benefit of their shareholders.

It's a pretty banal heel turn, as heel turns go, but still.
The team is cooking on some things, including a “zen mode” that can serve as a feature gate for a bundle of settings that turn down the volume on outrage and toxicity.

More on the product direction:
