Carboxylases are the best 🥰
New lab preprint!
@zestytoast.bsky.social tagged a scarce mycobacterial protein in M. smegmatis with TwinStep but got… something? @kjamali.bsky.social's ModelAngelo built models & @martinsteinegger.bsky.social's FoldSeek IDed them as the biotin-containing MCC & LCC complexes

Amazing, I wonder how many people are now sprinting back to some of their old data sets of small particles that they could never successfully process.. err, i have to go 🏃‍♂️💨
This one is a bit of a departure from the usual and definitely a work in progress!

We found that by using ab initio reconstruction at very high res, in very small steps, we could crack some small structures that had eluded us - e.g. 39kDa iPKAc (EMPIAR-10252), below.

Yes great, new grid boxes that have no space to write on. With lids that no standard tool can open. 👍

Received program for amazing cryo-EM symposium 👍 It’s on a Saturday, 9-5 🤦🏻‍♂️

Woohoo congrats!
Thrilled to share that I have been selected as one of this year's new EMBO Young Investigators. I look forward to meeting many of the other Young Investigators in the coming years, and I am most grateful to the members of my laboratory at the ICR who made this possible.

My UBR4, despite being very active, always looked like garbage on the grids. Need to dig in here to find the secret sauce! Congrats to @micharapelab.bsky.social lab et al

New #preprint - a amazing study of HECT ligase Tom1. This paper is a treat for those of you who LOVE #cryoEM and for those who love #ubiquitin! Congrats to the Fischer lab, including @moritzhunkeler.bsky.social and @ssroyburman.bsky.social who are on #bluesky.

Structural ubiquitin contributes to K48 linkage-specificity of the HECT ligase Tom1
Homologous to E6AP C-Terminus (HECT) ubiquitin ligases play key roles in essential pathways such as DNA repair, cell cycle control or protein quality control. Tom1 is one of five HECT ubiquitin E3 lig...

Over 4 years in the making, I am extremely happy to share our pre-print on the “In-cell structure and snapshots of copia retrotransposons in intact tissue”. We used cryo-ET to resolve the copia capsid structure to subnanometer resolution inside cells: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Interesting 👍🏻
I think the ideal is creating these during submission (which is doable) and having authors sign off on them just as they sign off that the PDF created from the Word file is OK

Read tomorrow's Nature to find out what we think 7 years of solving #cryoEM structures of brain-derived #amyloids has taught us about neurodegeneration, and where to go from here. With Michel Goedert and Ben Ryskeldi-Falcon, and very grateful to present and past group members.
