What sits with me after this week of #AMS2026 is that despite everything we’ve seen over the last 12 months, the science is resilient. It is hurt and handicapped and hamstrung but it endures. And the students, despite EVERYTHING **still** want to work for NWS or in broadcasting.

Good grief: According to research from Brenda Philips, info in flash flood warnings don’t necessarily influence people’s response and reaction during a flood. It’s their immediate situation and circumstance and the pre-event warning information. This is incredibly challenging. #AMS2026

This is an amazing panel 👏
If you’re at #AMS2026 Wednesday, come to the Weather Ready Nation session at 10:45 where I’m going to moderate a panel of some Houston rock stars talking about weather impacts in the food & beverage industry. How can we help make them more weather ready? Should be a fun & unique convo!

Re: Burnout

“The next disaster doesn’t wait for recovery… our stress hormones stay high… our sleep cycles are broken or fragmented… over time, the body stops sending alarms and instead the body starts forcing things… what we can do is become aware of our symptoms.”

For #AMS2026 - John and @pamknox.bsky.social report that Elevator #14 at the headquarters Hilton should be avoided at all costs. They had to be freed from it by Houston Fire Dept after it got stuck, and the FD told them it happens regularly with that elevator.

Winter weather is forecast to impact a large part of the country in the coming days. Will there be snow, ice, rain?

NWS Meteorologist Haley Thiem explains how the temperature of the air between the clouds and the ground determine the type of precipitation you get.

Continuing to monitor potential for ice in the Houston area. For the Houston area, this will likely be an inconvenient but most likely manageable event. If you have travel plans Sat night or Sunday (looking at #AMS2026 folks), there will likely be challenges.

Model ice maps are the only thing worse than model snow maps
Freezing rain also doesn’t accumulate on branches and power lines to the values seen in the models.

It accumulates at roughly 39% the value of flat ice, so for quick math divide all of those by 3.

Yes: major ice storm coming, 0.5-1” ice, power outages.
No: Widespread 2-3” of ice.
This would knock out power for tens of millions of people, for week*s*.

This is not a joke or exaggeration.
