I hope I have given fidelity, and that everyone viscerally understands:
You will have to come through me.
Many such cases, sadly.

The Iowa Lege is in overdrive trying to give the Laboratories of Democracy a lobotomy. The principle, always imperfect in its expression, used to be that the state sets the floor for rights.

With this, the floor becomes the ceiling.

The long and the short of it: this legislation would incentivize waste, fraud and abuse. What's the impetus? Trying to shift the cost burden of caring for vets from the state to the feds.
A bill proposed by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds was pitched as a way to improve ways for veterans to receive their benefits. However, members of the Iowa Association of County Veterans Services disagree with that statement.

Appreciate that Jess Djukanovic is speaking out about what she went through trying to get an abortion with a non-viable pregnancy in Iowa:

‘I almost died trying to get an abortion in Iowa’—a mother of 4 speaks out
This Iowa mother of four was heartbroken when her fetus received a fatal diagnosis. Then the pregnancy threatened her life, too.

Ottumwa!
404 Media just had an ad during the #SuperBowl! We Googled "smallest TV markets in the United States" and bought an ad for $2,550 that only ran in Ottumwa, Iowa, population 25,000. That still counts

The ASL is pretty neat, too.

Even this state supreme court would have to laugh this out of chambers, should it pass.

Under proposed legislation here in Iowa, my retweeting of this would cost me my teaching license – if I were a teacher.
even if there was good reason to set aside his repellant past i don't know why we have to treat the people like him and kirk who cut their teeth arguing with 19 year olds well into their thirties like members of a serious intellectual tradition

The bill is only for Kirk.
February 6, 2026 at 10:48 PM
They probably can, we'll see if they're foolish enough to try.
February 6, 2026 at 10:48 PM
I wouldn't put it past this Lege to run a bill renaming the Johnson County HHS building (where our offices are) for Kirk, maybe Rep Holt will introduce it.

The Iowa Lege is more interested in C Kirk than just about anything. www.legis.iowa.gov/publications...

We don't have the draft yet, but we're going to require wind or solar.

My entire service has been under a pugilistic Republican trifecta at the state level. The past year, under a predatory federal government. I have never complied in advance, and where absolutely necessary, I have given only my malicious compliance.

Somewhere, sometime soon, other supervisor candidates will be arguing we need more technocratic, less passionate administration. "Quit putting a target on our back! Focus on what the law requires, ignore what the law permits!"

She offered me $2600 to self-deport.
I refused.
I wanted to talk to my attorney.
They didn't tell me the judge had already ordered my release and return to Minnesota.’

Huh. Guess I'll stay the course.

(I would stay the course anyway, I'm stubborn like that.)
