Trail Builder in the PNW. Yes, I do it year round. Yes, it's wet.
Probably smashing rocks, looking for bones, knitting, or fighting the gods.

Trader Joe's check out guy: got any plans for tonight?
Me: oh, gonna review rigging safety for work.
Him: what's that?
Me: it's the type of thing old-timey loggers use to move logs. And sometimes it would explode and kill everyone.
Him: Jesus. And you still use it?
Me: yup. That's why I'm reviewing

"sun kissed skin so hot it'll melt your popsicle..."

The sun is hidden behind clouds and the horizon. I will not feel it's touch until July 5th

I wear five layers of knits and Carhartts against the perpetual damp

I recognized this road straight away, having only driven it once in the winter of 2022. Truly stunning in any season. When I was there it was completely covered in ice and the tree branches looked like they'd been hung with crystals.
Peak fall foliage in Oklahoma's Ouachita mountains. Yes, this is Oklahoma! #photography

What is already one of the most beautiful parts of the state absolutely comes alive in the fall. I've been wanting this shot for years, but I either couldn't get there during peak or there were active droughts.

Alright, I'm declaring this the storm of the century for Bellingham. The Wi-Fi at the library went out and the Trader Joe's flooded. I don't know how much more damage we can sustain 😂

Forgot to share the last couple weeks of my daily 5 minute drawings again. The first were drawings from Vase of Flowers by Jan Davidsz de Heem. The second were drawings from the Curiosity Cabinet of Ole Worm.

Nope.

I had an extended plan* in grad school to steal the gorgeous sailboat someone used to moor in view of the library windows. It had a pirate flag on it! That’s like an invitation!

Apropos of nothing, I really like this iconography, even if it's a bit novel. Usually you see a saint facing you and blessing you.

I like this "communion of saints" approach where they're facing the same way you are and doing the same thing you are... and where you don't know all of them yet
One of my favorite places in LA is the Cathedral: when my sister’s 1st child, my godson, was born I sat under Nava’s tapestries, looked at Augustine, & thought of @jamesmartinsj.bsky.social reminding us how the saints remind us of the infinite diversity of what love lived out can be, large & small.

If you're going to make a post praising an incredible news photo, it's a real bad look when you don't include the photographer credit in the post.

A devil sits down beside us,
and we say, yes, take everything,
all that we have. Become our king.
There's nothing we need to discuss.
We were aware you were coming.

The King Tides have arrived, as a squall approaches. The seastack is about 30ft high, with dozens of cormorants hanging out on top. Nothing seems to faze them...

fun fact: Halloween in the north of England used to be known as nut-crack night.

people would mark nuts with the names of lovers and place them around a fire.

nuts that sizzled, spat or jumped indicated romantic incompatibility. nuts that burned together suggested peaceful, happy partnerships.

I know I've been complaining for the past month about going to work in the dark. It sucks, and I'm glad the time change fixed that.

But I forgot how annoying it is to leave my house in the dark AFTER work to go socialize.

Hibernation is the only solution.

"But they don't get winters like ours!"

No, they get a perpetual, drizzling frosty damp that gradually saps your will to live and drives strong men mad.

Say it with me: THE WEATHER IS NOT AN IMPEDIMENT TO CYCLISTS WHO ARE WEARING CLOTHES.

Just reflecting on how many Stan Rogers songs are imbued with positive masculinity vibes:
-Work hard for the people and things you love.
-Protect your community.
-Find your joy in simple things.
-Life is hard so cry if you need to.
-Never give up or forget the bastards who did this to you.
