I'm still getting periodic bumps from the Tumblr meme of that one Skeet from last year. Wish I could retroactively add my website to that meme. old.reddit.com/r/CuratedTum...

New rule:
If you, an adult, come to the Map Center primarily for the purposes of challenging me on my knowledge of geography (a subject that I never claimed authority on but in which I happen to kick ass) you must propose a wager in the event that you lose.
Let's make it interesting.

I made a map of 3.4 million Bluesky users - see if you can find yourself!

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

Dear folks who come in to my store looking for something "I don't know, old I guess?"

Call your mother.

👀 What if I told you there was a hidden art gallery scattered across the country?

What if I told you some of its treasures had vanished?

What if I told you that I found them?

A project three years in the making (🎁 gift link):
The disappearing art gallery in your post office
The U.S. Postal Service is home to thousands of historic works of art in post offices nationwide. Hundreds have been lost, sold or destroyed.

I'm at home waiting for an important delivery that requires my signature. I have no way of contacting the driver, but I can see a periodically-updated location. They're doing a bunch of deliveries in Brooklyn. They keep getting closer to me, and then farther away.

"Are there any places that are special to you?"
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"Sadly, not aliens."

I'm doing a school visit this morning and the woman at the front desk checking me in tells me that the kids are excited about the program and that her husband is disappointed he can't come.

Thanks for coming out last night, Cohasset! These small library events are consistently getting 20-40 attendees and some really big smiles.

Nice little bonus to see the @wcvb5.bsky.social segment right when it finished.

If you like my brand of nerdy map content, come see me present How Maps Lie: an informative and entertaining exploration of just how wildly different maps are from reality.

Cartography is funny because we're all portrait artists painting the same model but not all of us are in the room. Most of us have to peek at maps made by other people to complete our own work. Sometimes the copied bits are mistakes.
What's your favorite map feature that went viral?

When animals like hedgehogs, pangolins and potato bugs (AKA rolly pollies or sow bugs) curl up into a defensive little ball it's called "Conglobation." Because they roll up into a cute little globe.

Writing my little bio for the GeoWeek conference in Denver in a couple weeks:
"Andrew is a GIS Specialist, podcaster, open source advocate, author of a book of maps for scuba diving in Monterey, owner of a map store..."
I could have just just said "open to work"

So this is a very early (1954) attempt to illustrate what the fallout implications of high-yield nuclear weapons are for war — basically just putting the Castle BRAVO fallout pattern over possible US targets...

...and I can't stop thinking about how ridiculously, hilariously phallic they all look.

New England is feeling pretty cold right now. Do I know any librarians in Southern California who might want to book a Map Guy to run a program so I can call the trip a business expense?

Forgot to post this selfie I took walking through Mt Auburn Cemetery a couple weeks ago. Found Nathaniel Bowditch who wrote THE textbook on maritime navigation. A legendary wayfinder and teacher.
