Had a lovely chat this morning with someone who came into the store looking for geospatial career advice. Idk man, the industry is big, always changing. No one knows the future. I'm acutely aware that most of the advice I ever got was complete BS.
I've had awesome mentors so I try to pay it forward.

There is no land on Earth that is free from human bloodshed.

I bring this up not to downplay the crimes committed against people in the name of territorial aggression but to remind us that all of us, no matter where we live, know better.

Do I know any Indigenous folks who make maps? Got a request for a paid design/cartography job and it'd be rad if I could connect you with them.

Welp, got my first flat earther. Shame he was so freakin' nice. Big smiles. Polite.

Insufferable.

Just got a pitch from a building developer in Providence who might rent to the Map Center. They offered an eye-wateringly high price.

I know some folks don't leave this state but RI is, in fact, competing with other places. Some of them are looking mighty attractive by comparison. #hasbro

A stack of "This Way Up" books by the Map Men (@jayforeman.bsky.social + Mark Cooper-Jones) just arrived! I'm delighted to report it is every bit as funny and thoughtful as their YouTube series which makes me laugh and glower in envy at their talent in equal measure www.mapcenter.com/store/p/this...

Just reflecting on how many Stan Rogers songs are imbued with positive masculinity vibes:
-Work hard for the people and things you love.
-Protect your community.
-Find your joy in simple things.
-Life is hard so cry if you need to.
-Never give up or forget the bastards who did this to you.

#30DayMapChallenge Day 1: Point 🍑✨
This was one of my early explorations in #LEGO mapping, back in Spring 2024. Now I turned this design into a 3D model using round tiles (flat points), creating this "flat" 3D map of #Georgia. View more: cartoguophy.com/maps/lego_ge...

Visited Westerly, RI this weekend. Cute town. Gorgeous library and adjacent park. They have a statue of Columbus with a fence around it. I don't think you'd need a fence for a statue of Verrazzano, just sayin'.

Day 1 #30DayMapChallenge: Points 🧵🪡

I created a hand-felted map of Wellington showing Community Emergency Hubs as buttons, using locations from the GWRC web map viewer (via the Natural Hazards Portal).

It is roughly to scale, offering a soft, tactile take on community resilience. 💚

I chose to map this pene-exclave using a modified antique style. Point Roberts is a small community only accessible via the water or by driving through Canada (twice if you’re coming from the US!) I enjoy that our little exclave is nestled by our 🇨🇦 neighbors.

In mediaeval times, maps were made by laying a very big piece of paper over the town, and rubbing the surface with a crayon.

But also the best bookshops (mine)
We’ve been instructed to use the phrase “available in all good bookshops”. But I believe it’s also available in bad bookshops. Basically, wherever you buy your books.

For those who aren't deep in the geography nerd-verse, November is the #30DayMapChallenge where map makers challenge themselves to make one map every day according to a list of themes. If you need inspiration, Rhode Island has plenty!
Keep an eye out for good maps this month!
Day 1 - Points
Rhode Island Lighthouses

Most of my maps will be about Rhode Island. A good way for me to learn about a place (and find datasets) is to try to create a map of a thing.
