Dr. Patty Heyda is coming to @rhodeislandcollege.bsky.social to talk about her book The Radical Atlas of Ferguson USA by @beltpublishing.bsky.social publishing. If you're a map nerd, sociologist, political scientist, journalist, environmentalist or interested in social justice, don't miss it.

Visited Westerly, RI this weekend. Cute town. Gorgeous library and adjacent park. They have a statue of Columbus with a fence around it. I don't think you'd need a fence for a statue of Verrazzano, just sayin'.

Don't worry. She'll hold together.

I now have a library catalog author citation number so I might have to get a good neck tattoo of ".M77E63" at some point.

During the covid lockdown one of my coping mechanisms was becoming fascinated by my windowsill jumping spider that I named Doris (the spider). I painted her because she was such an excellent roommate.

They used to publish local street map books with alphabetical lists of all of the streets in a particular area.

Now, I think there are aesthetic and practical arguments that can be made in the paper road map vs app debate but there are so few reasons why those analog databases should exist.

I'll never do a talk in a community with more than 50,000 people again. Not while small towns are rolling out this kind of red carpet.

Spent this afternoon on the Woonasquatucket River, one of 3 that flows through downtown Providence. I got a grant from Mapillary, an opensource streetview alternative that works with @openstreetmap.bsky.social to take these pics.
A map can be a menu of options and I added one of my favorites to it.

Eric performs live with trippy cartographic visuals and an improvised professional musical accompaniment by the very talented Ed Osborn. It's gonna be in Jordan's Jungle (across the hall from The Map Center). It'll be a kaleidoscopic and verdant experience, followed by snacks at The Map Center.
