A Roman tombstone from the
2nd half of 1st century AD. It records an imperial freedman of the emperor Claudius (r. AD 41–54), Saturninus. He was an official collecting inheritance taxes in Achaea (Greece). Set up by his wife Flavia Saturnina. Now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. #EpigraphyTuesday

The Sphinx and the Pyramids of #Giza, photographed by Maxime du Camp in 1849. The chest area of the Sphinx had only recently been uncovered, previously the statue was covered with sand up to the shoulders.

I think we all need a timeline cleanse right now….

An adorable #Greek rhyton in the shape of a #cow's head. Vessels such as this one were used in drinking parties. Since they didn't have a base, their contents had to be consumed before the vessel could be put down

Dating ca. 460 BC.

I think that Canterbury Cathedral epitomises Mies Van de Rohe's words: "Architecture is the will of an epoch translated into space." The late 14th-century nave at Canterbury Cathedral 🕍 feels more organic than man-made to me 🌿—an utterly remarkable achievement of medieval craftsmanship ✨

“The canton of the Durotriges of Lendiniae”a building stone from #HadriansWall mentioning the British tribe of the Durotriges based around Dorset inscribed on a reused altar. These Civitas stones survive showing the tribes of Britain contributed to the rebuilding of the wall.

The Rudston Monolith at over 25 feet (7.6 m) is the tallest megalith (standing stone) in the United Kingdom. The weight is estimated at 40 tonnes. The monolith is made of gritstone. The monument dates to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age.
