A building stone of the 1st Cohort of Tungrians found in the granary wall at Housesteads fort. The stone is upside down indicating it was reused here when the building was divided into two. The tungrians came from the area which now covers east Belgium. #RIB3326 #hadrianswall #archaeology

The Housesteads chap, another good luck symbol carved into the late Bath house wall within the fort. Very hard to see in bright sunlight so a sidelight on a winters day does the trick #hadrianswall #archaeology

A heavy fall of snow at Vindolanda fort a few years back, a moment of almost complete silence on site apart from the soft patter of snowflakes which drew my imagination into the past. #hadrianswall #archaeology #northumberland

Taking a break from the Christmas crowds in York to look at a section of fortress wall in the museum gardens. York was founded in the AD70’s but earlier defensive ditches have been found possibly from a slightly earlier expeditionary campaign.

Looking west at Brocolitia fort at on #HadriansWall. The wall runs under the military road but the north ditch is visible. The fort was a later build created to fill a gap between Housesteads and Chesters fort as evidenced by the vallum which was filled in and the fort built over the top.

A Roman funerary monument found at the fort of Verbeia (Ilkley) and now in the local museum. I wonder if they thought their images would still be gazed upon over 1800 years later

The remains of Peel turret at Steel Rigg on #HadriansWall was an extra addition to the wall dating to the late 2nd Century AD but was short lived. The view shows in the foreground how the wall was rebuilt and narrowed during the reign of Septimius Severus #archaeology
