Yesterday I watched a Red-tailed Hawk dismantle a squirrel carcass in Central Park while someone played Vivaldi across the lake. So here’s, uh, that, just in case you too need to dissociate for a couple minutes 🪶

(I added the track, since the original sound didn’t really come through on the video)

DON'T use language that can be read as polite nothings.

DON'T ask a generic open-ended question that requires someone to have already pre-brainstormed a list just in case someone might ask/offer to help.

DON'T flake out halfway through.

Ideally, DO be prepared to touch base AND ask repeatedly.
Mpls: If you are working to support neighbors right now I *highly* suggest avoiding the generic "let me know what you need" and instead asking/offering directly:

"I'm going to the store. Send me a list."

"Do you need shampoo? Fruit? Toilet paper?"

"Can I help with your laundry?"

"How can I help" is vague and makes the person feel awkward at best. telling them you will do a thing and giving them a set of options overcomes that and gives agency.

Seriously. Even "Hey, I got $X in points at the grocery store, what are you low on?" Definition makes it less awkward for everyone.
If you haven't been in this spot before, think about how weird it would be to rely on someone else to get you such basics, to help with sensitive things like laundry. It's AWKARD to ask for.

So break the awkwardness a bit by opening up the door with specific suggestions to show what you can do.

This is great advice in general. Don't put more labor on people who are struggling!

Offer something specific. If they need something else, you having offered something still usefully gives them an opening to ask for that other thing.
