Four years ago, I recorded short material that I pulled from the public domain. I did my best to release one a week, as an experiment that lead to It's Storytime.

This is Umberto Eco’s essential 1995 essay, Ur Fascism. It was shockingly relevant in in 2020, and it remains so today.

I do think that a possibly underrated dynamic in The Horrors is that the Right as it has reconstituted itself under Trump legitimately can’t understand sincere moral or physical courage

Whether it's Donald Trump's DHS Secretary saying that protesters deserve to be shot or a low-level Biden staffer asking Facebook to correct COVID misinformation, but sides have a checkered relationship with the First Amendment.

None. And none were arrested. If I'm remembering correctly this guy had several open warrants for his arrest at the time & eventually showed up at Bundy 2: Malheuer.
Remember the Bundy insanity during the Obama years? Armed guys occupied a federal office and one of their buddies took position with a sniper rifle aimed at federal agents?

Exactly how many of those guys were shot and killed?

No @chrismurphyct.bsky.social, you're wrong. At a minimum their unions need to be decertified. Every agent, officer, & employee needs to be suspended pending a full review & revetting. The bulk of them need to be terminated. A significant number need to be prosecuted. That's what has to happen.
We should not fund DHS without serious reform. We could return CBP to border. We could require warrants for immigration arrests. We could beef up training and require identification.

The list of possible reforms is long. What's unacceptable is the current lawless status quo.

I can't put into words the feeling of watching our government, a hive of evil antisocial filth, the absolute worst humanity has to offer, colliding with the best. Ordinary people trying to help each other, risking everything to stand up for what's plainly, unambiguously fair and right. It's unreal

It is 100% about dominating cities and states that didn't vote for Trump. Narcissistic injury expressed as civil war.
Pew Research Institute (2023):

• Red State Texas has about 2.1 million undocumented immigrants

• Red State Florida has 1.6 M undocumented immigrants

• Blue State Minnesota has 130,000.

And yet only Minnesota is being occupied by masked thugs over "immigration."

It's *not* about immigration.

To add to this, almost all of the U.S.’s problems are linked to its hatred of Black people and that it hates Black people more than it loves anyone else. Our laws and policies are largely based on making sure Black people (and sometimes other groups) don’t benefit even at the expense of others.
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

I’m not to blame but I am responsible. I wrote this during the protests & riots after the murder of George Floyd. What I knew then is what I know now: that we all matter or none of us do.
Please read this.
And act accordingly.
Courage. Use it.

I’m a cop. I won’t fight a ‘war’ on crime the way I fought the war on terror.
The failed strategy I participated in for years as a CIA officer is not how to police people I consider my neighbors. It's not how to police at all.

things off the top of my head that i can think of that conservatives have called tyranny

- health care subsidies
- seeing pronouns in an email
- being suspended from a social media platform
- pride month
- baking a cake for a same sex wedding
- legal rulings against donald trump
- EV benchmarks
Trump's thugs are going hog wild and tossing gas around in one of the busiest commercial districts in Minneapolis, just a mile or so from where I live. Complete insanity.
