Incredible. The people of Minnesota are inspiring a nation.
A coworker took this from her apartment. I haven't seen a crowd this size before. Maybe the first Women's March? But it was much much warmer that day. ICE OUT OF MINNESOTA!

A terror organization not a law enforcement organization
We’ve covered lots of losing local teams on the back page of this paper.

But none with a record as bad as the Chicago DOJ during Operation Midway Blitz:

0 convictions

11 charges dropped

3 no-billed cases

1 jury acquittal

NEW: I was one of 3 reporters granted access to the convening of 600+ clergy in Minneapolis this week.

It was a striking show of solidarity with MN clergy resisting ICE, but heralded something else: the emergence of a vast, faith-based network trained to resist ICE. religionnews.com/2026/01/23/i...

(RNS)— Hundreds of clergy from around the country gathered in Minneapolis to learn from Minnesota faith leaders how to protest against ICE enforcement. Then they took to the streets and helped block t...

Yep. There are split duties here. Miller broadcasts undisguised bloodlust to the base, openly relishing the sadism and cruelty of ICE's paramilitary warfare against Americans on Fox News. Vance sells it to non-MAGA Republicans and independents by speaking piously about law enforcement under siege.
Excellent piece. Though I expect Miller to continue what is mostly his role—with notable exceptions—of going on Fox to tell Republicans exactly what Donald Trump wants them to say.
It's now very clear that JD Vance is consciously taking on the role of putting a softer face on Stephen Miller's fascism. Vance is becoming chief propagandist for ICE's violent paramilitary warfare against Americans.

Some thoughts on that in this piece:

One thing that might get a little overlooked here is how important it is that DHS is massively exaggerating arrest totals (10k??). What people on the ground know is that immigration enforcement is barely occurring, and ICE/DHS are really conducting a terror campaign in the guise of enforcement.

Everyone wants to blame the content: misinformation, bots, polarisation. That mistakes catalysts and symptoms for the underlying causes. The crisis isn’t bad information, it's that the very information infrastructure we relied on to create a shared understand of the world had changed completely.

"Systems adapted to attention scarcity outcompete those that aren’t, regardless of ownership."

Sitting with this. May help explain to me why the resistance to Trump is so effective when he's in power compared to when he's campaigning. We adapt by necessity.
My claim isn’t that information failures float free of material conditions. It’s that once those conditions shift, the information environment becomes the decisive selection pressure. Systems adapted to attention scarcity outcompete those that aren’t, regardless of ownership.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

It is important to acknowledge who is standing up and who is just trying to get by. Every day Americans are standing up while the powerful are mostly standing by.

Why aren't law firms standing up and sending lawyers to Minneapolis. Why aren't the corporations speaking out? Why isn't the media?

This is not a serious operation to enforce immigration law. It’s a performative show of force and it’s gotten way out of hand.

Research on gender is particularly relevant for understanding ICE, which is overwhelmingly male and uses messages of masculinity and domination in its recruitment materials. A lot of men may be joining ICE because they think it will allow them to bond with other men and gain power in our society.
For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.
