I’ve been thinking about how to best explain myself to y’all who are new to me, and I think I’m going to do a thing from Twitter where I repost 20 books that have had a big influence on me, but without any commentary. So here we go!

welcome to bluesky. if the word "mapquest" means anything to you and/or you used it as a verb, you're in the right place

We are doing a pilot survey about how prospective PhD students in PSYCHOLOGY make decisions about applying to grad programs. If you are thinking of applying to a program in the future, and have 2-5 minutes to spare, could you take this survey? 🫶

Idk y’all I think this is the inevitable outcome of this policy situation given GOP control of the legislature and the White House’s position against the enhanced subsidies.
UPDATE: The Senate votes 53-47 to shoot down the Baldwin amendment to extend ACA funds for 1 year. A party-line vote with every Republican rejecting it.
An important vote in this series: Tammy Baldwin’s proposal to extend ACA expiring funds for 1 year. It’s structured as a motion to table (i.e. scrap it from the amendment tree). But it’ll show the appetite (or lack thereof) in the Senate to address this issue.

Plausible. Also plausible they thought it was possible that the elections would push Trump to seek a deal; when that didn't happen, they decided to stop now rather than to continue indefinitely with no obvious future marker out there and real harm being done.
Capitulating Democratic senators waited until after the election, indicating they know capitulation was a bad politics that bothers their voters and reduces their chances of retaking power.

What was your end game? Keep the government closed until 2027?

Again, not saying that I think this "deal" is good; I wouldn't have voted for it if I was in the senate. But in the last 40 days I haven't heard anyone articulate how we get from where the state of play was yesterday (both sides really far apart, dug in) to Rs give us the concessions we wanted?

I think where I’m sort of at a loss though is that it’s not clear WHEN or HOW Republicans will face consequences. Like is this supposed to last until the next congress gets sat in 2027? And what would be the thing that would make Rs move before then?
Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

If you're arrested in Illinois for the means by which you acquire food for your family because of the government shutdown or loss of SNAP benefits, I can represent you pro bono. Email me at sheryl@weikallaw.com. As always, I will take as many cases as I can.

That Doug Jones, a legit civil rights hero, would go into this race an underdog against a football coach should scandalize everyone.
Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones appears to be headed for another political showdown against current Sen. Tommy Tuberville, this time for the governor’s office.

An update from the NWS on the potential snow event. Read it.
One key: “…As a result, the expectation is for the lake effect snow bands to be unusually intense with peak snow rates of 3 to locally 5 inches per hour, frequent lightning and thunder, and pockets of hail.”

Read this WHOLE thread, and think about how you might be similarly locked into some flawed ideas.
Today I learned that Lincoln Park high school is about half the size of Lane Tech and has 40% more Black students than Lane does.
This came up in a conversation about how media coverage of Chicago's current political situation is still locked into some outdated ideas about race in this city.

lol I’m still not bought in to the idea that the ground will be cold enough for much accumulation, but I’m also not a meteorologist so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
