The difference in response is because many of us were out there with our fellow Portlanders getting teargassed in 2020.

We saw what federal occupation looks like. We also saw some of our elected leaders fail to rise to the moment. We’re not going to make the same mistake.
It can't be overstated how different this response is to that of the Portland city council that was in place in 2020 when federal officers turned downtown into a nightly combat zone.

The majority of the 2020 council was much more willing to openly blame Portlanders who showed up to protest.

Never be mean to women
A couple was arguing in the building next to ours. Their windows were open. Dude was being a real asshole for a good ten minutes. His gf finally just snaps and yells, "Y'know what? You have a little dick, and you use it badly."

The silence. Good god. The silence. I assume he is dead now.

Just got gassed pretty good at the labor union anti-ICE protest in Portland. Massive march, 5-10k strong. Vibes were very much liberal rather than radical. Lots of kids and older folks.

They gassed the whole crowd as soon as it marched on ICE, in broad daylight.

I've been selective about which protests to attend cause I ain't trying to get caught up in the tear gas. But I also know everything is riskier now.
Thousands of protesters marched to Portland's ICE building Saturday.

Demonstrators were met with large clouds of tear gas, pepper balls and flash-bangs shortly after their arrival.

I’m *extremely concerned* about the way folks are reforming their image of the cops in light of everything that’s happening, even though we only have a handful examples of them disagreeing with ICE, while still being responsible themselves for the murders of Black and brown people across the country

We should also note the incredible naïveté involved here, likely due to these folks having positive, privileged interactions with the police in the past.

What I’m saying is: this is an anomaly and we can’t expect the cops to save us

"the most radical act in a capitalist society isn’t marching, it’s not spending"

I really agree with this, and I would add that not participating in tech spaces also makes a huge difference. Get off of platforms that you think are run by bad people. Leave. (Start with Meta!)
The best tool we have to push CEOs to take on the president and prevent further erosion of the American brand is in our pockets — an economic strike that builds on calls for Apple boycotts that are already starting to emerge.
