Some slopologist thought they'd owned me with a dumb meme, so I fired up imgflip and owned them right back.

You're welcome. 😎

Right. You've got to fight fire with fire. If the hype is absolutely off the charts, then the amount of raging pushback has to be similarly off the charts!

Look, *do* I want be raging about AI tomfoolery every day? lol nope. I'd much rather hike through trees or play an instrument. Yet here we are.
the "it's impossible to have a conversation about AI right now" folks need to grok that a huge volume of that furor is entirely justified rage at the fact tech oligarchs purchased an automated murder autocracy; rage that's good and useful and deserves a generous berth in the months and years to come

Someone got very angry at me just the other day when I posted we still have no idea what consciousness/qualia is therefore we can't build a digital replica of it. I also reminded them we have no idea how to build a "warp drive" either, but it sure is fun to watch on TV!

HB 456: Protecting Kids from Pesticides

Overwhelmingly the evidence suggests that children are particularly susceptible to the well established harms of pesticide exposure. It is our duty as physicians to do no harm, which is why UPHE supports H.B. 456.

another week, another tech platform imploding… 😭

Serious question, which microblogging social network is not "extremely weird" about it?
February 11, 2026 at 10:15 PM
By far the most likely massively disruptive outcome will be economic bubble collapse due to the meltdown of OpenAI, Oracle, Nvidia, other tech firms swimming in fake VC money, etc.

So how do we plan for that?
February 11, 2026 at 10:12 PM
It would be beneficial to you, methinks, that you attempt the effort to understand why it *did* elicit such a strong negative reaction.
I confess I do not understand why “the left should prepare for the worst case scenario with AI and jobs” seems to have elicited such a strong negative reaction bsky.app/profile/chri...
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.
February 11, 2026 at 10:09 PM
Excuse me, where is it not "extremely weird"? X?
February 11, 2026 at 10:07 PM
Huge numbers of people are also NOT using AI, and that's also "just a fact of the world". Also a fact: there's heapings of nuance and reasoned argumentation past "AI sucks".

One of the ways we fight injustice is refusing to use their framing and engaging in the debate on their terms.

Yes, there are cases in which it makes sense to "use the weapons of the enemy" to fight the enemy. But it's a dangerous game. There are leftists who post slop videos making fun of Trump, but I consider that nearly as ick as any "Trump flies poop-dumping plane" garbage.

We are better than this!

Again, this rhetoric isn't usable in good faith for many other technologies. Refusing a version of how nuclear weapons will unfold…? Refusing a version of how abestos will unfold…? Refusing a version of how public access to assult rifles will unfold…?

Why does "AI" get a pass? Nothing is "a given."
I don’t really pay attention to charges of doomerism. I don’t know what it means offline.

I do know that refusing a version of how the future will unfold forecloses on the power that actually shapes that future. That’s not disavowing that tech changes are happening but they are in now a given.
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

If the "hype is true", soon your job will no longer be required. We'll all be watching AI talking heads and listening to AI podcasters.

I'm serious. That's what the hype is. If you disagree, you'll need to be **way** more specific about which hype, exactly, you are saying is true.

Wow this news, combined with the departure of Mrinank Sharma who led Anthropic's Safeguards Research Team, really underscores the fact that Big AI has completely failed in its original stated goals. They have now become shameless capitalist tech corporations like any other in history.

Question: Is Claude a new being?
Answer: No. It is a SaaS product built and deployed by the humans working at Anthropic.

I have also built and deployed SaaS products in my career. Strangely, The New Yorker never asked one of them if they had a concept of selfhood. 😂
Experiments conducted with the A.I. system Claude are producing fascinating results—and raising questions about the nature of selfhood. Gideon Lewis-Kraus reports from inside the company that designed it, Anthropic. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/rOfXjg
