when my dog was alive, I once brought a new bed home for him with a toy snake, and when I put it down and gestured for him to get on it, and then threw the toy, I could see how happy he was realizing it was all for him
One of my happiest memories growing up was when we unwrapped the new dog bed we'd put under the tree.
My dog may not have understand where the presents were coming from, but he clearly understood the concept of presents, that everyone was getting some, and that that one was for him.
