The orchestra section at the Orpheum might be the Spirit Airlines of Boston music venue seating but Opeth was still incredible.

Among its gorgeous photography of Louisiana locations, and its thoughtful conversations between the lead actors about race, family, and class, the romantic drama CANE RIVER (1982) features more horseback riding than I've seen in some Westerns. Now streaming on @criterionchannl.bsky.social

The freakiest and most ambitious of the SNDN films. Serial killer Santa is gone, replaced by Clint Howard in a penis mask and even more f'd up stuff. I'd grouse about the acting, but the fact that there seems to have been a perpetual gas leak going on during the shoot only adds to the demented vibe.

RIP Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

An absolute all-timer, Tagawa was the kind of talent who’d make something infinitely better simply by virtue of being in it.

Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

FIVE ELEMENT NINJA has everything I love about Shaw Brothers in one movie. Colorful characters, costumes, crazy weapons, that red paint for blood and acrobatic high octane martial arts action choreography. Pure unadulterated cinema!!

Talk to your buds about movies you watch! This week I was lucky to program & guest on Episode 750 of The Gentlemen’s Guide to Midnite Cinema. Hear us yak (nearly 3 hrs) about Gakuryu Ishii’s atmospheric 1994 thriller ANGEL DUST + the narco-Eighties action mindmelter, FISTS OF STEEL. [LINK IN BIO]
