it is so bad for conversation that bad actors have lumped all machine learning stuff together under the label of “ai” while mostly marketing the stuff that is going to destroy society. humans are bad at pattern recognition and there are tons of places where better tools will help!
so I can explain this: it's not generative AI: it's usually deep learning models trained on meteorology tasks and it can be quite effective
I know It would only annoy me, but if you are using weather balloons for data, where does the AI come in?

I think one of the deep ironies of present events is that having the historic reference of Hitler, Mussolini, et al has actually made it HARDER for people to see what Trump is, because they go “Well, he’s not Hitler” and mean the cartoon supervillain version of Hitler they see in historical memory.
That's been the case historically as well. Both Napoleon III and Hitler were initially seen as utter buffoons at the time.

Stopped for a Blanding’s Turtle trying to cross the road this afternoon. I helped her across but when I walked back I found one that wasn’t so lucky. The drought has dried up the marsh here and there were lots of turtle tracks across the mud and could explain the movement.

The big reason I'm trying to hammer "civil conflict/political violence" here is because I've spent a substantial chunk of the last five years looking at mass graves. I want a society where people aren't plotting to kill their neighbors and throw them into one. That's where all this can lead.

i think it is hard for some people to really their heads around the reality that kennedy is staunchly anti-vaccine and thinks that people should suffer through disease and that those who die deserved it and that those who survive are a better order of human being

I've been saying to friends for a few months that the more I study authoritarianism in other countries, the more concerned I become that the CBS story is the sleeping giant here. The process has been a simmer (people inside the network have spoken out in real-time) but don't mistake slow for safe.
One of the first things Vladimir Putin did on becoming president was take over NTV, the TV channel that hosted a satirical puppet show because he didn't like the Putin doll and how he was portrayed. He arrested NTV's owner and only released him when he signed the channel over. #Colbert
