If you are in Seattle, please go patronize this store because this is amazing content/promo πŸ˜‚ (laughing to keep from crying, and I do kind of low-key want that orange spider plant I have never seen that before)

πŸ“·πŸ¦ŒCover article! Congrats to @wildco.bsky.social PhD candidate Taz for leading this nuanced paper showing that the effects of wolf reduction on caribou calf survival depend on landscape context. Compensation by other predators may limit benefits for caribou. #openaccess doi.org/10.1002/jwmg....

Outdoor cat owners are mad if I invite myself to hang out in their yards but have no problem allowing their cat onto my property to poop in my garden, shed on my deck furniture and kill wildlife.

I bought Christmas Smarties from Bulk Barn last month for Christmas baking. Bought too many, whoops πŸ™ƒ They make for a nice reward after shovelling the driveway.

1. Very important study - and the primary reason I avoid infection.

'The long-term impact of COVID-19 may be consequential years after the infection and give rise to long-term illnesses including neurocognitive problems similar to what is seen in Alzheimer's disease'.

I will never tire of getting to see cool nature in my own yard. The birds (and squirrels) at my feeders are vigilant and are always too quick for the neighbourhood family of Cooper's Hawks. I hope they're more successful with the feral pigeons in the nearby farmland! πŸͺΆ

2nd year Intro Cell Bio. Grade was based on a multiple choice midterm and multiple choice final, no other evals or question style to demonstrate knowledge. I then took it as a summer distance-ed course that included graded modules + an exam with different types of questions and did much better!

I'm the only weirdo still putting all of my lectures on live zoom + posting recordings that I know of these days. Students like it and sometimes need it.

It is EASY to just stay home if you feel sick or just need to sleep in to get some rest.

It costs me about 7 min per lecture to do it all.

Do Canadian MPs actually connect with the public on X?

I looked at RTs and views for every tweet* sent by Liberal MPs yesterday

Out of 46 tweets, 21 Liberal MPs racked up a combined 475 retweets

34% had zero RTs. Only 17% got more than 10 RTs

3 tweets accounted for over half of all engagement

In addition to all the important points made, I would add another: field work not only gives insight into the depths of nature, but it also gives insight to the value and limits of data we collect to understand nature.

As someone trained as both a field ecologist and quantitative scientist, this tension runs deep for me. Some of my group are entrenched in the field whereas others work with models for a living.

One of the saddest parts about being alive in the ongoing C-19 world, as someone who has stayed up-to-date on the research and lived by it, is that you find out that most everyone you ever knew is happy to move on building a life without you in it, by painting you out as β€œcrazy”.
