Let me introduce myself. I'm a professor @usask.bsky.social at the University of Saskatchewan. My group works on invasive wild pigs, caribou, wolves, and other beasties. I take the responsibility of my academic freedom very seriously and use it and good science to hopefully have some influence.

yes it is a nice relaxing spot..warm and smells like coffee. Definitely in Saskatchewan.

Wow that's super cool. We captured dozens of moose with a net gun from helicopter and never had any issues releasing them. We also did a one time spring calf count for all of the collared females which meant pushing them out of cover to count the babies--zero issues.

Like most things, I only learn from my moosetakes.

Pro tip: keep your ‘to do’ lists short and manageable.

Where am I?

Habitat loss in Canada’s grasslands has threatened many species.
That includes the American badger, which Fisher described as “one of the most important, central and iconic species that remains of the North American grassland ecosystem.”

Yikes. That will get your heart rate up!

The best option to avoid a moose confrontation is to remember you are ALWAYS in moose country and keeping aware. Have a quick scan of the area before proceeding outside.

If you encounter a moose close up DO NOT start taking photos or try to get closer. Remain calm and back away. Get to shelter.

Moose are generally calm and just ignore us, but..

Obvious signs of a pissed off moose:

-ears back
-head low
-hair on neck up
-smacking lips
-snorting or grunting
-stomping feet

or..there may be little to no sign before a moose charges.

I did an interview today about an aggressive moose in Saskatchewan that caused some significant concern. There is no place in this province that I would be surprised to see a moose at this point, including my neighborhood in Saskatoon. 1/3

It is Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week here in Saskatchewan. I would start with thanking some teachers that fundamentally changed my life. So many great ones.

They have deep pockets after sucking at the Tom Cruise teat for decades.

Olympians are masking up with N95s because they know a covid infection can derail their chances of competing.

They know it could derail their careers.

They know it could disable them.

They’re practicing self care and community care.

Give them a gold medal in public health!

Get vaccinated with whatever and every vaccine offered.
When possible get them from a pharmacist or nurse :: Sorry docs :: physicians give the most painful shots.

Just heard Little Red Riding Hood has been found in critical condition. Paramedics have her stabilized but she's apparently not out of the woods yet.

As an aside, the worst polar bears I've encountered in my three decades of fieldwork along the Hudson Bay Coast are those with blood on their face like this guy below. You can see bugs all over the face and blood on the cheeks--mosquitos and black flies have been driving them crazy.

It would be a lot easier if the small band of low IQ separatists just moved to the U.S. or North Korea. Done and done.

Begs the question --is there even any testing going on in Saskatchewan and Manitoba? My best guess is no.
The significance of this is that pigs act as "mixing vessels" for genetic exchange & re-assortment of viral genomes, which facilitates the potential emergence of novel flu strains that cause epidemics/pandemics among humans.

Very powerful and important. The Alberta separatists are a low IQ collective living in a fantasy of their own creation. Alberta is not separating. It just isn't.
Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation (undoubtedly to the frustration of certain KC’s and separatist leaders)…

Are making it clear that they can speak for themselves.

A new fact sheet blows absolute holes in a LOT of the separatist lies.
