Why preferential voting is superior to first past the post
Australia has long had preferential voting, and it is the best system for safeguarding our democracy.

There's so much "Look over there!" going on in politics that the people who most need help (Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan) are being pushed out of the headlines and there isn't enough focus on changing their situation.
Kyiv is in total blackout,
as are many parts of Ukraine.
No water, no heating, no electricity.
Severe frost outside.

This is the result of constant russian attacks.

Thank you to those few who still care.

It's all happening again isn't it, and just like 2016 there's not a thing anyone can say or do about it. You have to let people walk on the coals themselves. You can't tell them.

@churchcat.bsky.social Was thinking about the importance of songwriters and musicians over the centuries for leading and recording the history of protest and solidarity by and for ordinary people. Always been somewhat taken aback when asked "what's the point of Folk Music". :)
“We’ll take our stand for this land And the stranger in our midst.” Never doubt the strength & power of the protest song, or art, to bring us together, to remember, to stand in solidarity. That’s why they hate us. As the Greenham Women sang, ‘You can’t kill the spirit.’
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

History shows a pattern here.

When governments begin criminalizing the observation of dissent—using technical oversteps as justification—it’s often a warning sign. We’ve seen similar patterns precede press crackdowns in countries like Turkey, Russia, and Myanmar.

Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

"We have to deny this, for form’s sake, for domestic audiences and to reduce the chance of reprisals," the logic goes. "But we nonetheless want you to understand we did it, and that we would do it again." The purpose of a deterrent is to deter.

They know what they say is untrue, they do not care it is untrue.

The media know that what they repeat is untrue, they do not care it is untrue.

Their supporters know what they are told is untrue, they do not care it is untrue.

Telling the truth is not enough, unless people care about the truth.

This can have consequences for how agents see themselves. If they put on clothes designed for war, they are more likely to see cities as hostile terrain and citizens as enemy combatants, which can increase the chance of violence. Link to the story here:
