the enormously funny fact is that if Taiwan drops their claim to the owning the mainland, this would be seen as an affront to the PRC
Also the US recognised that Taiwan is part of China and that the People's Republic is the official government of China but that doesn't constitute recognising that the PRC is the government of Taiwan.

The Russo-Japanese War was the first major conflict in history that saw more deaths in combat than deaths by disease.

A major cause of death in pretty much every pre-20th century war (especially siege based ones) was highly curable bacterial diseases ripping through people in close proximity to each other, as opposed to actual violence.

Da eg gjekk på barneskulen tidleg på 2000-talet, fekk vi grundig svømmeundervisning over fleire år. Den kommunale svømmehallen frå 1979 var klar for utskifting da, og no er det heilt krise. Det lek frå taket når det regnar. Betongen under hovudbassenget er mjuk som softis.

Fann nettopp ut at Tynsets einaste bokhandel, Tynset bokhandel, la ned i haust. Så tragisk! Der kjøpte eg Ringdrotten på tilbod ein sommarferie for 15-16 år sidan. Og slik vart eg norsklærar, barn.

I dag, kanskje enda meir enn før, burde det vera heilt tydeleg at vi ikkje har den minste peiling på kva slags kunnskap som vil vera nyttig om fem, ti eller femti år.
