Last month, I had to get in touch with the "hospitality" arm of a Theatre because I needed to ask an incredibly basic question that required response in less than 3-5 days and that didn't even break my Top 10 annoying interactions with businesses for the month.
My big "old man" thing is going to be telling my grandkids that I remember when if a product or service didn't work you could contact someone who works there and they would help you fix it

I hate it when Devs leave placeholder art in the game, it totally breaks immersion.

Yeah once again this is a classic (intentional or not) mix-up between "generative AI" and "machine learning".

You can make really helpful ML tools using sparse, locally-sourced datasets, like with the line art placement work they did on the Spider-verse movies.

But that isn't "generative".
This is simply not technically possible. You cannot generate enough writing in-house to train an LLM. You cannot generate enough art in-house to train a GAN. People who think they have a model "trained on our own material" are using a base model of mass-scraped data, unknowingly or disingenuously.
Larian CEO says Divinity could have gen AI assets in it but only if the tools are trained on the studio's own data.

"If we use a GenAI model to create in-game assets, then it'll be trained on data we own."

Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.

The confusion and conflation of ‘generative ai that is built on stolen artwork’ and ‘machine learning, character behaviour modelling and proc gen’ is intentional on the part of the grifters peddling the former. They benefit from murkiness of classification, because the latter predates their bollocks

The industry's highest honour is getting a laugh out of a "ship it" joke and We All Know It.
I think some people think The Game Awards are more important than they are because they called it “The Game Awards”

it’s just called that

it’s a sponsored award show started by a journalist/presenter in 2014, it’s not the industries highest honour

The pacing of modern television is so cooked, it takes 4 hour-long episodes to cover what would be 45 minutes of The Vampire Diaries.

My wife walks in on me watching this, overhearing intense biblical analysis and asks what I'm listening to.

I say "New Jacob Geller video" and she rolls her eyes as she hears the words "Hollow Knight: Silksong".

sort of incredible to read a review that doesn't just made a vague nod at AI being bad, but actively reckons with the ways in which falling obsessively to AI usage actively obliterates the artistic intent and integrity of the work you've made.

This is by far one of the funniest interviews I've ever read, good for them.

"Yeah we don't like large teams, time management software or spending any money at all really and that let us enjoy making a video game for 7 years"
BREAKING: Silksong will be out on September 4. Two weeks from today. Really.

Often, games that take 7+ years to make are plagued by mismanagement and painful burnout. But for Silksong? Team Cherry was having a blast. They still are.

This is their story: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
Why ‘Silksong’ Took Seven Years to Make
The highly anticipated indie game has been in production for so long that it’s become an internet meme

I love doing stuff like this, because I'll solve like 200 and I suddenly start dreaming in Picross.
Someone made a website where we all collectively solve every possible 5x5 Nonogram (aka Picross) 😅

Game funding is in a drought, yes, but not because good games aren’t out there.
It’s that no one with money wants to fund something that isn’t already a success in disguise.
That’s not investment, or partnership- it’s financialization of art.
Hey,

To my game dev peeps out there,
what is your number one challenge related to obtaining funding for the game you’re trying to develop? 💜

Listen I'm not saying I'm not honoured, okay? Especially if we're talking early seasons for these characters... But... How did I get an 83% match with a Robot that can only speak in referential media- oh...

I don't want an AI that renders images that vaguely resemble Ghibli films. I want an AI - or just a regular I - that informs everyone the man's name was Yoshifumi Kondo, he's the guy who designed the characters you think of when you think of "Ghibli", and he died in 1998 at age 47 from overwork

So did really well, probably my best performing video of all time, which is a big surprise since I didn't use most of my usual tricks.

But I wanted to share something really interesting about this one, from a "YouTuber" perspective.
Been a while since my last tutorial, but messing around with the relatively new #Godot Compute Shaders gave me inspiration! youtu.be/QjrAJwaUy64
