THIS. Americans as a group never recognize violence against minorities they hate or fear (black people, queer people, sex workers, migrants) as what it is: a foot in the civil rights door. And once that door is wedged open, it ain't hard to insert a gun barrel or throw in a tear gas grenade.
At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.

At the time of Maher’s detention, disability advocates warned that taking away Wael’s caregiver put his life at risk.
