The pear crisp thread has a methods section. We can replicate it. I want to see a Bluesky pear crisp meta-analysis by the end of the month.
they were then asked to rank each crisp on a scale of “very satisfied, somewhat satisfied, neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, somewhat dissatisfied, very dissatisfied”, which became numerical rankings. it was a verbal sharing process because cmon, it’s a hang. you don’t eat pear crisp in silence

I learned a bit of Blender cause manufacturer of the couch I'm interested in doesn't have a feature to preview materials. I think I nailed the desired "Sims 1 furniture I've been in love with since I was 10" look.

Another one I get sometimes at work is, 'I can't do regression because my response isn't normally distributed.'
Confusing stats language:

The "linear" is linear regression means "linear in the parameters".

It does not mean "can only fit straight lines", and things like polynomials and splines can be included in linear models.

alright let’s get something more pleasant going. what two books would you leave out on your coffee table so a reporter can mention you have them. doesn’t matter if you’ve read them. for me it’s Pale Fire (which I did read) and Ulysses (got like 15% of the way in)

Replayed Papers Please and man the fact that it feels GOOD as a border inspector to find something wrong in an immigrant's paperwork and deny them entry is such effective design-as-commentary.

I need to find time to get back into board games. P500s for Henry, Bear Trap, and Decisive Action are all coming up soon and I don't want them to just go in the shame pile with everything else from the last 5 years

I ask my primary care doctor to not use AI scribe and I feel a little bad cause making her type a bunch is a burden. But I really don't trust those systems.
a few months ago I said "having generative AI handle absolutely anything with regards to healthcare is a nightmare and should be banned" and a bunch of people made fun of me and called me stupid. anyways,

“individual employees asked to change behavior in response to catastrophic mistakes made by their high-level leadership over the past 3-7 years” really feels like the overarching story of the current times
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.
Target is now requiring its employees to smile more
As the holiday season fast approaches, Target is urging its employees to add a little more “jolly” to their work routine.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Just reflecting on how many Stan Rogers songs are imbued with positive masculinity vibes:
-Work hard for the people and things you love.
-Protect your community.
-Find your joy in simple things.
-Life is hard so cry if you need to.
-Never give up or forget the bastards who did this to you.
