I really think the people who say "anyone can call themselves trans these days" imagine some kind of past where you'd go to the doctor feeling poorly, men in white coats run a battery of tests and then, eventually, the doctor says solemnly "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I have to diagnose you with trans"

How the fuck else do we determine we're trans if not through self-identifying? You have to figure out you're trans (or might be) before you can even begin the process of fighting through the system to transition. This is fucking stupid.

once again i cannot emphasize enough that transphobia is almost entirely an elite panic. the overwhelming majority of people simply do not care—it is media and political elites who are obsessed with us and keep bending over backwards to justify and spread transphobia.
the idea that trans rights have swung elections to republicans is a fiction made up by media and political elites (both conservative and liberal) who are personally transphobic and want transphobia to be politically popular so they no longer have to hide how disgusting they think trans people are

Tbc I favour using 'trassexualism' over 'gender incongruence' precisely because there's little difference between the two. It moved categories in the DSM and a few diagnostic criteria changed iirc, but it's still a 'mad trans' diagnosis--
"No one thinks trans people change sex", "women can be male", "gender affirming care", "GRS"--so much trans politics has been developing euphemistic language to soothe the understanding of cis people, even "supportive" "allies", in a way that preserves "sex" as an immutable category.
