Here comes the 21st century…
"Iran is facing its worst water crisis in decades. With no end in sight and authorities warning they may even have to evacuate the capital of 10 million people, residents like Ensani are scrambling to respond."

Taps run dry as water crisis forces Iran to consider evacuating its capital
A prolonged drought along with years of overconsumption, an inefficient agricultural sector and mismanagement have led to the problem, analysts say.

"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

The EU MERCOSUR Trade Deal is being railroaded through — with promises of traceability safeguards the latest Trojan Horse.

But how credible are these assurances? And why should Ireland stand behind a deal that risks harming the Amazon and its Indigenous communities?

All Airbnbs being rented year round are in contravention of planning laws. Houses built for private residential tenancy need to apply for change of use. If you built a house without following the rules it could be torn down. We could solve this Airbnb problem overnight, there’s no political will.

Great insights from afar. I worry about erosion of public trust in traditional news sources. The democratisation of knowledge across digital platforms doesn't allow for effective editorial of content so public need to discern vast flows of information not always curated for balance or complexity.
The RNZ MediaWatch attempt to self diagnose the ongoing destruction of NZ media and emergence of a polarised low trust information environment is welcome, but falters for reasons related to the macro problems.

An excellent article highlighting this inequity. Yet we have also failed to understand the massive material footprint our move to digital society entails, let alone the social cost from increasing isolation it prefigures. Our move to frictionless society bears social harms abroad as well as at home
"Essential services are now digital by default, leaving many older people feeling locked out of their own lives."

As more of our lives move online by default, digital ageism has quietly become one of the last unchallenged prejudices, writes Fiona Daly.

It’s difficult to underestimate the extra burden that this is placing on our public libraries. For example, on a daily basis library workers are now filling the in-person/human service gap that billion euro banking institutions have abdicated from to maximise their profit margins.

For a purely ceremonial role, we have been blessed with remarkable individuals in recent times, representing in part how we have grown as a nation. Michael D's passionate advocacy & strong sense of social justice always pervaded his time in office. Looking forward to Catherine Connollys presidency.
Michael D Higgins, with his wife Sabina, has left Áras an Úachtaráin for the final time as president.

He was given a guard of honour by members of the Sanctuary Runners, a charity of which he is patron.

The President’s term of office ends at midnight.

Absolutely on the nose about some of the professional commentariat....a maddenly reactionary mindset devoted to the status quo.
Serious Guys’ desire for approval has them support anything the neoliberal consensus demands: abolishing neutrality and embracing EU militarisation; financialising the housing market; basing our economy on the tax receipts of a handful of US corporations.

A really excellent article which reasons very effectively why current AI/LLMs are overhyped, are not in any way an effective replacement for human domain expertise while posing a concerning risk of cognitive decline when outsourcing our thinking capacities to AI/LLM agents.

This is an attack on Access to Justice, championed by the “abundance bro’s” and media insiders who peddle government talking points in lieu of actual journalism
The Government's new stated aim is to make it so unattractive for lawyers to take good cases against the State that they will stop. Not bad cases. Good ones. Successful ones. This new rule only applies if you *win* your case. Doesn't that worry anyone slightly?

1. This is a thread on freedom, and how easy it is to lose.

Over the past 2,000 years in Europe, there have been few periods and places of freedom. For much of the time we lived under highly oppressive tyrannies of various kinds, whether small or grand, local or imperial, secular or religious.🧵

There is so much good generated from this service.....
I'm a bit of a nerd about this - but it's hard to quantify just how popular Local Link buses have been in 'rural Ireland' - new one will link villages from Cork to Kerry that haven't had a bus service since the 1960s... www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-n...

Great thread on media responsibility in the midst of increasing political polarity & normalisation of far-right politics.
The media’s normalisation of evil really irks me. This tulip meets every definition for a Neo-Nazi - at the very least he should be described as a fascist, or far right. ‘White nationalist’ ignores his antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, anti-miscegenation & Holocaust denial.

Oh this is wonderful. Some serious display of skills from this pelican..... & photographer
Last night I watched over 100 pelicans feed just off the coast after sunset. Here's one of them. 17 frames taken from a sequence of 44 over 2.5 seconds. Incredible dinosaurs!!! 🪶

Frightening account of the chilling effects of Trump presidency. An article well worth your time reading. FT has been responsible for some good journalism this year.
"Such is their fear of jail, bankruptcy or reprisal, that most people I spoke to insisted on anonymity. This was in spite of the fact that many of the same people said Trump would only be restrained by powerful voices standing up to him." My Weekend FT essay. Please read it. on.ft.com/4hqblpr

As a marginalized person encroaching on the rights of others offends me. As a privileged person it also offends me.
