Please don't share any of my art on Twitter, not even to help me sell a book. Not worth it.
Heads up to artists still using Twitter- Twitter is now adding an "Edit image" button under all images posted on the site that allows everyone to feed it into genAI and modify it as they wish with a prompt

Just a thing about this: a common statement in writing is that you can fix crap, but you can't fix a blank page.

I have heard AI apologists claim that this is why it's fine to generate a first draft.

Now, to be clear, fuck this.

But also: an AI draft is a fucking blank page.
I know I don’t talk about writing much. It is because I am writing so slowly.

But I want you to know that I am taking a part of this story that absolutely sucked and took me months to produce four of the worst chapters I have ever written and in the edit I figured out how to fix it.

Game designers who "can't draw" but want art for prototypes... beyond the wealth of public domain stuff available (there's lots) there are artists who make stuff that's VERY affordable and Itch has a ton on sale right now. #NoGenAI

We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists who are currently or have previously worked in game development about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier.

Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder.

Concept Artists Say Generative AI References Only Make Their Jobs Harder
“The ‘early ideation stages’, when worlds are being fleshed out by writers and artists, are literally crucial to the development of a game’s vision,” said one artist.

This is such a misunderstanding of why writers, artists, and designers do research to begin with, which is to find something unexpected, not capture the average or find reference for the default.

And, as always, the biggest misapprehension: We don’t want to NOT do this part. It’s fun to learn shit
Anyone who supports this is an embarrassment. "Instead of typing it out they'll generate their idea"? Are you insane?

Call yourself whatever you want but you aren't creatives, that's for sure.

How about a little Monday #artshare? :)

The usual rules apply:
- post your own art, introduce yourself a bit
- be nice, interact with others and support them!
- no NFTs, no AI
- Share this post for visibility (optional)

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.

Anyone know of some good feeds to share wildlife photos in? Anyway, the annual elk visit is upon us in my neighborhood, and I was finally able to get some shots!

I've had clients hand me genAI mockups as a "this is the vibe/layout we're going for" but I'd rather have a MSpaint/napkin drawing than AI.

I loved it whenever commissioners gave me their little stick figure doodles. I can see what you want, my imagination is (partly) what you're paying me for.

Kendall pretending there's no clear consensus from a consultation that had an INCREDIBLY clear consensus is reminding me of that time there was a massive consultation not to sell off Channel 4 & Dorries mixed up the 'don't sell' bar with the 'do sell' one.
NEVER go Full Dorries.

AI has actively made life worse for literally everyone

- tech is now more expensive
- you cannot trust most media of reality anymore
- programs barely function
- energy prices
- literal psychosis
- your voice can be literally stolen for evil
- more spyware

but hey, you can avoid paying an artist.

If these numbers are true, filming the ad with real actors and props, either in real and common locations like streets and houses, or in front of a greenscreen with human-made CG environments, would have been faster AND cheaper than paying 10 specialists to work around the clock for seven weeks
gonna be so cool when half of all jobs in society are just different versions of polishing AI turds

I enjoy attending UGKE, and I understand there’s a lot to running a con, but as a board game illustrator of a few years now it’s uncool to see them so indifferent on AI.
I'd like to say a couple of things about UKGE and their silence in regards to the whole AI debacle.
I'll start with a disclaimer: I know UKGE is a HUGE opportunity for many small businesses and publishers, and in the current unstable financial situation we're all in, skipping it because of ethical>

Still so excited for everyone who showed up to this yesterday! It was stunning to see a sea of creatives overwhelm that tiny hearing. We had an overflow room of artists and the line for 30 second public commentary literally had to be cut off!

You made a huge difference
yesterday.

Thank you!

Clients, who have made me toil for weeks over indescribably small details, are now approving & producing in-house commercial artwork that looks like a fever dream.
