For the Jewish side, it was because they kept getting murdered in the shtetls outside Lvov; for the Catholic side, it was because they kept getting starved by the English (grandma's side) Habsburgs (grandpa's side).

All of them escaped regimes that actively wanted them dead
Genuinely curious: If your family is American, what brought them here?

Stayed up way passed my bedtime to watch "Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," and I really didn't think I'd get teary-eyed over a heartfelt conversation about a song about a let's say unconventional sex worker but here were are, it's 2026 and things are what they are

I just left messages for Gillibrand and Jeffries and wrote a message to Schumer's office (yes, 2/3rd of my pols are literally the two minority leaders, WHAT FUN) and if my lazy ass can do it, so can you.
Dems managed to get a 2-week delay on the DHS bill, so CALL YOUR SENATORS AND YOUR REPRESENTATIVE EVERY DAY FOR THE NEXT 14 DAYS. Tell them you want ICE, CBP and all the rest of it defunded and dismantled. Tell them you will be voting against anyone who doesn't do this. This is our chance.

Bruce Springsteen reminding us why he is and always will be the Boss
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

I’ve spent a good chunk of yesterday and today in a fog, but this was what broke through. I love this goddamn city so much:
brass solidarity band performing “stand by me” in the streets of whittier next to alex pretti’s memorial. the crowd started chanting “the people united will never be defeated” so they incorporated it into the song. i love minneapolis

After this terrible weekend, what I honestly needed was this bonkers adaptation of Dunk'n'Egg where Baelor Targaryen is immediately charmed by Dunk, Tanselle is immediately sweet on him, and Lyonel Baratheon continues to sexually harass him. The himbo we need imo

I'll tell you one thing: if I ever meet any of the dickheads who are making delivery workers go out with their piddling ebikes into this storm tonight because they wanted a fucking pizza or whatever, it is on sight unless you can prove to me you gave them a $100 cash tip

I'm not kidding

After shoveling snow for the past 45 minutes I will say that I'm glad the Union Square protest was yesterday. I can deal with cold or wind or snow, but all three at the same time is a lot for non-Minnesotans.

I will now wrap up in 17 blankets with a gallon of hot chocolate and "Shetland" season 10

Look, I was in awe of Minnesotans long before this—I once spent three days in Minneapolis in the winter and thought I was gonna die—but truly they are heroic. And their heroicism stems simply from actually giving a shit and doing something about it.
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

This is a fundraiser for the poor child who was kidnapped by ICE today in Minneapolis, his photo has been all over my feed and rightfully so. If you can donate/boost, please do. And as always, fuck this shit and fuck anyone who had anything to do with it.
Please help us bring Liam Adrian Cornejo Ramos (he’s only 5 years of age and is currently in pre-K. Yesterday, he and his father were kidnapped by ICE. This will help the family with legal services to help reunite Liam and his dad with their family.

Now that this has resolved (relatively) harmlessly, I invite you to marvel at this thread about a busnapping that happened this evening.
I just woke up from a nap and somehow while I was asleep, everyone on the bus has figured out we are not going to the right place

Help, Merriam-Webster can't figure out what I'm looking for: what's the term for a brief phrase used about someone who's died? Not epithet or epigram, something similar??

Out of curiosity, how many people under 25 believe me when I say restaurants used to have "smoking" and "non-smoking" sections? Usually in the same room with maybe a rope line between them?

I get people's fury at Democrats who don't speak up (or don't speak up enough) about Minneapolis, or Venezuela, or any one of the hundreds of horrors that are happening to us by the day. But it is important to know that it's not ALWAYS bc of fecklessness. Sometimes they're doing good shit like this!
DEFEATED! Democrats joined by 6 Republicans just took down this anti-worker bill, the final vote was unchanged from below.

Mike Johnson spent nearly an hour trying to flip Republican holdouts but ultimately gave up, his first floor defeat of the year and likely not the last.
Some House floor drama as Republicans are currently losing a vote on a bill to let employers to exclude workforce education and development training from minimum wage and overtime calculations. Labor-friendly R's (there are a few, sometimes) voting no, Johnson huddling with them for ~30 mins now

Today in House-Hunting with Gus, I learned that not everyone goes through a prospective apartment visualizing where she would put the secret door and/or secret cubbyhole. Isn't that like half the fun of looking for a new place to live?

This is a huge fucking deal and Democratic politicians are trying to talk about it as much as possible, while also juggling about 15 other crises that are erupting every day. This is a big fucking deal.
The House just decisively passed legislation that restores the Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Over the objection of Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson.

If you don’t know, now you know.
