You know you’re getting on in years when the Jugendliebe sends you several texts with typos, followed by this:

(I was eighteen when we met. Guess it’s been a few decades …)

(Einmal gut geheiratet reicht fürs ganze Leben.)

Our friend the San Lorenzo Harlequin Toad is rather dull compared to many other Harlequin Toads, which tend to have bright colors! They live in several small areas in high-altitude mountain forests of Colombia! (photo by Alejandro Lopez)

As well as Bowie it’s also Elvis’s birthday today. Which means we get to post what are the second best Ampelmännchen in Germany - in Bad Nauheim, Hessen, where The King was stationed 1958-60.

The Squidling's fact-a-day calendar states: "When they are born, octopuses are the size of fleas."

To this I say, first, source needed. Second, octopuses are hatched. Third, what kind of octopus? Surely they are not all the same size at hatching, given adult sizes vary a lot.

Fourth? Adorable. 🐙

Just realized what’s been missing.
Sometimes in life you just need to stop and yell in a basket on the sidewalk. Photo from my collection, no date/info.

Europeans didn't learn about electric eels until after they learned about electricity. There are electric catfish in the Nile, and they were called thunder fish.

Native S. American peoples called electric eels something that translates to: the fish that takes away movement.

“Prioritize the good stuff”
With the way 2026 has started, good stuff might be hard to find some days. But I will try…..

My son put it best when he was a young kid: "Cats are great because you get happy every time you encounter them. You turn a corner, and there's a cat there, and it's like there's a cat, and that's great."

I always think about it whenever I turn a corner and encounter a cat.
