Once a library school grad, always a sarcastic individual with too many books and not enough shelves. Definitely not making Mt. Holyoke, Stony Brook, or Pratt proud.

The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!

This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...
Spotlighting The World Factbook as We Bid a Fond Farewell
Somewhat devastating news today from the CIA: One of CIA’s oldest and most recognizable intelligence publications, The World Factbook, has sunset. There's not even a hint as to why they …

Here’s what people will miss from this:

1. Tony Schviaone immediately stops talking when the FUCK ICE chants got louder
2. TBS and HBO MAX did not censor the chants at all
3. This 10 second moment from AEW fans during a main event has now completely changed the landscape of pro wrestling.

No, I do not want to be a “creator journalist” or “influencer” or run a newsletter by myself

I want health insurance and a decent editor to work under and a team of comrades to work with, attend union meetings with, do good with

If you want to read the transcript of the February 3 hearing where Julie Le had her "this job sucks" meltdown, now you can:

This is unreal. An AUSA talking like that in open court is about as close as you can come to a total breakdown. Never heard of anything like it.

Our founders, though deeply flawed, understood that democracy requires an informed citizenry and a government accountable to it people. That’s why the press is the only profession protected by the Constitution. It’s also why autocrats and oligarchs seek to control and destroy it.

The election denial movement relies on propaganda and urging their believers into action based on genuine belief that they are in the right.
People saying "there aren't enough ICE agents" are kinda missing the point. The point is to get people to distrust the results of the election.

worth noting that the second rich people stopped being afraid of mobs tearing them limb from limb, they stopped building libraries and opera houses and stuff and started ripping the copper wiring out of the walls of society instead

In a sane world, the decision by Rufo, Vance, & co. to slander and slap a target on the traumatized, hardworking immigrants who revitalized a rust belt city -- and who *were invited* to that city -- would be a stain on their careers that they never live down.

They should be reminded of it. Often.

The Post eliminated its books section and most of its local coverage. The Kennedy Ctr ended all of performances.

Institutions are community ANCHORS. Writers of books, dancers, teaching artists, hip hop poets, musicians, critics, they depended on an ecosystem anchored by the Kennedy Ctr & WaPo.

Black people have always lived under fascism. The laws and rights that you and I take for granted were never applied equally to Black people.

We got this fascism by disregarding the most vulnerable and marginalized in our society.

If we vote and act to protect Black people, we protect ourselves

Jeffrey Bezos is destroying the Washington Post for the same reason Musk destroyed Twitter and Ellison is destroying CBS—oligarchs oppose the free press when if it threatens their wealth and power.

They don’t want normal people to see what is happening in America.

They weren't rookies

The two federal agents who murdered Alex Pretti had a combined 20 years of experience with BP or CBP, and simmered in a toxic culture with an absurd crime rate that must be erased, not "reformed"

After Nixon was forced to resign, Republicans took the lesson not to stop being corrupt, but to demolish shared reality.

After Romney lost with scant minority support, Republicans took the lesson not to stop being racist, but to demolish democracy.

Once Trump is gone, what lesson will they take?

I've quoted this passage from Trump -- where he states his intent to cause riots and US economic collapse -- so many times. He flat-out announced it on Fox News in February 2014. In my book HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT I quote my own 2016 essay warning of his plan:
